CONTEXT
Another aspect of human functioning—emotion—has proven to be even more challenging to study than cognition. There are so many theories on emotions, but none are all inclusive; therefore, emotions continue to be mysterious, and the study of emotions is considered a work in progress. Emotions appear to be out of conscious control, yet they provide feedback that aids in self-understanding and information about our perceptions of the social world.

IS CORPORAL PUNISHMENT NEEDED TO DISCIPLINE CHILDREN?

.  For your Final Paper, you must demonstrate an understanding of a topic in psychology beyond the information presented in the course textbook.  Incorporate material from across the course, by describing and applying psychology knowledge as you integrate new research findings, into a cohesive and well-written paper.  This learning activity will facilitate the development of research techniques, critical thinking, and writing skills that are necessary to be successful in the field of psychology.  You may include personal experiences as examples to explain concepts and inform your audience.
You will have already selected a research topic from the list below in Week Three of the course.  You must continue to use your selected topic.  The topics include:

  • Is corporal punishment needed to discipline children?
  • Does violence in the media contribute to violent behavior in children?
  • What techniques have professionals used to treat insomnia, and how effective are those treatments?
  • What does research show about the effectiveness of the major techniques for promoting weight loss?
  • Are intelligence and personality stable across adulthood and into old age?

To begin, research the chosen topic using scholarly resources and craft a thesis statement regarding your selected topic.  For assistance with creating a thesis statement, visit the Ashford Writing Center or the Ashford University Library.  Your Final Paper must contain at least five references from scholarly sources that were published within the last five years and are cited according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.  Examples of scholarly sources include: peer reviewed journal articles, research studies, professional websites with authored material, and government websites.  Popular internet sites (Wikipedia, Newsweek, New York Times, etc.) are not considered scholarly sources.
Then, address the following criteria as you write your Final Paper:

  • Include a well-written introduction with a succinct thesis statement and a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis.
  • Integrate research findings that address the selected topic.
  • Discuss the key issues and controversies surrounding your selected topic.
  • Discuss multiple perspectives on the selected topic, so that the discussion is balanced and not one-sided.
  • Include a summary and analysis of the findings from the research.
  • Include any additional research that could be done in the future, and provide solutions that could be implemented in the present regarding your selected topic.
  • Consider the cognitive and behavioral implications might play a role in your selected topic.  What learning principles could factor into the topic?  What theories of motivation and personality could influence your insights into the topic?

Discuss in detail the concepts that lead to the intergroup conflict, such as stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. How have these attitudes and behaviors created and perpetuated the ongoing conflict?

Reducing Intergroup Conflict
Research suggests a number of strategies to reduce intergroup conflict. To further explore these strategies, in addition to readings in your text, read the following article paying particular attention to pages 588 to 593. Hewstone, M., Rubin, M., & Willis, H. (2002). Intergroup bias. Annual Review of Psychology, 53, 575-604.
You are a counselor in a detention center for delinquent adolescent boys. Your current project is to devise a way to reduce intergroup conflict that has been escalating between the boys at the center, many of whom were active in local gangs.

  • Discuss in detail the concepts that lead to the intergroup conflict, such as stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. How have these attitudes and behaviors created and perpetuated the ongoing conflict?

  • Discuss the different strategies to reduce intergroup conflict found in your text and the Hewstone article.

  • Looking back at the course discuss 2 to 3 additional concepts that could be applied in helping a person overcome these negative attitudes and behaviors.
  • Keeping these strategies and concepts in mind, what activities and/or programs can you create that will help these boys overcome this conflict and learn to work together, respect each other, and come to see each other’s differences as valuable. Briefly summarize each program/strategy in 2 to 3 sentences each in preparation for part 2 of this project.

Answer the above points in a 2 page paper. Your paper should be single-spaced, typed in 12-point Times New Roman font with normal one-inch margins, and free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page with a running head, an abstract, and a reference page.
Part 2:
Create a 4 slide PowerPoint presentation (not including title and reference slides) to present to the board of directors for the detention center that will cover the following:

  • A detailed outline of each of the 3 to 4 programs/strategies that you would like to put into place at the center.
  • Discuss for each program/strategy why you believe it will be effective within the context of your detention center.
