Question descriptionThis project is intended to give you field experience. For this project, you are to interview a person who has experienced a serious illness. This illness can be acute or chronic. Examples include but are not limited to cancer, multiple sclerosis, depression, PTSD post traumatic stress disorder, lupus, fibromyalgia, and congestive heart failure. Your questions should reflect the issues and concepts we will discuss and read about in class. Due to confidentiality, please do not share your interviewee’s name and/or identifying information. The project is due during the middle of the semester at Week 4.
This assignment requires the following:

  1. A brief biographical sketch including whether your interviewee is living independently, with relatives, a retirement home, assisted living facility or nursing home. How old is this person now? How old were they when they experienced their illness? (20 points)
  2. What are you most curious about this person?: (10 points)
  3. A list of preliminary questions is provided below, though it is expected that you will add at least FIVE (5) more questions to your list as we cover the objectives of the course. (10 points)
  4. Tell me about the psychological and emotional changes that have occurred as a result of your illness
    b. How has your illness changed your social life? Describe the social changes that have occurred.
    c. What are the three most important facts about illness and healing that everyone must know? (10 points)
  5. How do you define and health and healing?(10 points)
  6. Finally, discuss at least one theory or concept that we learned about in class and explain how this theory relates to the individual. Please use two scholarly sources to support your theory. (20 points)

Length
Use a word processor (preferably MS Word) to create your paper. The final paper should be 6 -8 pages in length, double-spaced with 12 point font, not including tables or the reference list.
The final paper should include a title page, an introduction, a thesis statement, a body, a conclusion and a reference list. (20 points for proper APA/AAA style, grammar, spelling, quality of writing and inclusion scholarly references) Total assignment points possible for this assignment is 100 points.
Readability
Your paper should use correct grammar, effective topic sentences and transitions, an organized and clear flow, limited use of quotations, and synthesis of information using your own words. It should incorporate references.

Epidemiological data consists of statistical information on your population obtained through primary sources, which are typically research studies or government survey information (such as those provided by the CDC or health department).  Utilize the Ashford University Library and/or government websites to locate statistics that relate to your organization.  For example, if you interviewed someone from an organization that focused on childhood obesity, you would locate research studies that provided statistical results for your county, region, or state to illustrate what was actually occurring in your area regarding childhood obesity.  Once you have this data, compare it with the information provided by the agency director or representative that you interviewed.  In some cases, you may only be able to find actual state statistics, but your organization may have provided only local data.  This is okay; just make sure you note this in your paper and through critical thinking, infer how this might influence the effectiveness of your organization’s work.
Your paper should be three to four pages in length, excluding the title and reference pages, and formatted according to APA style guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Visit the Ashford University Library to locate a minimum of two scholarly sources that support your main ideas. Also, use surveillance information that was discussed as part of the epidemiology process.
