Week 2: Finding Sources of Evidence

Describe what topic you selected, the search term(s) that you used, ( SEE BY DAY 3 FOR DETAILS)

Question description

Week 2: Finding Sources of Evidence

In acquiring a background on a topic with the goal of developing an evidence-based practice, it is essential that you identify resources that are both accurate and scientific. How comfortable would you be defending a new practice if it was based on information from Wikipedia or something that you read in a random blog post that you found using Google? The time taken to ensure that you have located meaningful, credible information will provide confidence in initiating new practices. One characteristic of a credible and thorough research study is the care that is taken prior to the start of a project to determine what is currently known about a subject and to evaluate the quality of the information that is reviewed.

This week, you focus on finding meaningful, credible evidence on a particular research topic. You consider what types of sources have been previously vetted by experts in the field for the quality of the content. You also explore the different types of evidence that can be used, and you are introduced to search techniques for identifying evidence for EBP.
To prepare:

  • Choose a simple search term(s) relating to a topic of your PICOT question.
  • Review the information on the evidence hierarchy discussed in Chapter 2 of the course text, in the article, “Facilitating Access to Pre-Processed Research Evidence in Public Health,” and in the multimedia presentation “Hierarchy of Evidence Pyramid,” found in this week’s Learning Resources.
  • Review the information on the Walden Library’s website, “Levels of evidence.” Take a few minutes to explore the different types of databases available for each level of evidence and focus on the meaning of filtered and non-filtered resources.
  • Conduct a literature search in the Walden Library on your selected topic using the databases that you reviewed. Use at least one database for each of the three levels of filtered information and at least one unfiltered database. Record the number of hits that you find at each level of the hierarchy of evidence.
  • Select one article from the results at each level of the hierarchy. Compare the articles based on the quality and depth of information. What would be the value of each resource if you were determining an evidence-based practice?

BY DAY 3

Post a summary of your search. Describe what topic you selected, the search term(s) that you used, and the number of results found at each level of the hierarchy. Compare the types of information found in the articles from different levels and the value of the information from each level. Highlight a useful tip that you could share with your colleagues about conducting an effective literature search.

PICOT Statement

PICOT Statement

Question descriptionReview the Topic Materials and the work completed in NRS-433V to formulate a PICOT statement for your capstone project.
A PICOT starts with a designated patient population in a particular clinical area and identifies clinical problems or issues that arise from clinical care. The intervention should be an independent, specified nursing change intervention. The intervention cannot require a provider prescription. Include a comparison to a patient population not currently receiving the intervention, and specify the timeframe needed to implement the change process.
Formulate a PICOT statement using the PICOT format provided in the assigned readings. The PICOT statement will provide a framework for your capstone project.
In a paper of 500-750 words, clearly identify the clinical problem and how it can result in a positive patient outcome.
Make sure to address the following on the PICOT statement:

  1. Evidence-Based Solution
  2. Nursing Intervention
  3. Patient Care
  4. Health Care Agency
  5. Nursing Practice

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.
This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

public policy essay

Question descriptionFinancial support to those who care for elderly family members (as in Germany and the Netherlands) vs. Subsidies for professional elder care assistance (as in Japan)
Paper
In your paper, give a detailed description of each of the two policies. Your description should be based on some combination of the way these policies have been implemented outside the United States, the way they have been implemented in parts of the US (if applicable), and policy proposals made by advocates and scholars. When applicable, you are encouraged to describe more than one option for each program (for example, gender-neutral parental leave vs. separate mother and father allotments).
A minimum of five sources are required.
After describing each policy, write a discussion section in which you address two questions. First, which policy do you deem preferable to enact at the national (federal) level in the United States, and why? Second, what are the chances such a policy can be enacted?
The paper should be 6-9 pages. The minimum page count is more important than the maximum. The discussion section at the end should take up about two of those pages, with the rest dedicated to detailed description of the policies.
Starting points for outside research on work-family policies
The Web site of the Work and Family Researchers Network, or WFRN is a good starting point for research into all of the above policies (https://workfamily.sas.upenn.edu). From the “Resources” link in the menu near the top of the home page, you can access a variety of content.

  • The Work and Family Commons is an archived of published and unpublished research on work-life issues. It is possible to browse by topic, and to select research tagged with a variety of keywords, including some that are relevant to this assignment (leave, dependent care…). It can also be searched.
  • The WFRN site also houses the archive of the Sloan Network, an earlier repository which is very useful, despite not being updated since 2011. The Policy Briefs might be of particular interest.

Boston College’s Center for Work and Family has a repository of research reports aimed at executives and policymakers (https://www.bc.edu/bc-web/schools/carroll-school/sites/center-for-work-family/research.html). Among other things, the global work-life section offers excellent reports about policies in selected nations.
