Using Improvement Science Models to Promote Quality and Safety   …while all changes do not lead to improvement, all improvement requires change.  —United States Agency for International Development  Improvement science models bring together research and evidence-based practice to identify the most effective ways to promote quality and safety in health care. As a central tenet of quality improvement, attention must be paid to the processes that contribute to outcomes.  In this Discussion, you examine quality improvement models and evaluate how they could be applied to address specific issues within health care organizations.
To prepare: •Review the improvement models presented in the Learning Resources.
•Evaluate each of the models and select two on which to focus for this Discussion.
•Consider how each of the two models could be utilized in a health care organization to promote quality and safety. Think about the following: •How does the model bring together research and evidence-based practice to facilitate quality improvement?
•How does the model contribute to a culture of quality and safety?
•How does it address changes in process?
•Reflect on the quality improvement issue and the health care setting that you are addressing for your Course Project. Of the two models that you have selected, determine which one you, as a nurse leader-manager, would use to address this issue. Also consider how this would relate to one or more of the IOM’s six aims for quality and safety.
By Day 3  Post your analysis of how the two improvement models that you selected could foster a culture of quality and patient safety and facilitate changes in process that promote positive outcomes. Explain how you would use one of these models to address the quality improvement issue in the organization that you have selected for your Course Project, and how doing so would relate to one or more of the IOM’s six aims for improving quality and safety.

In addition, technology competencies are discussed along with strategies for evaluating health information technologies in coordination with nurse informaticists.
•Chapter 7, “Evaluation of Patient Care Standards, Guidelines, and Protocols” (pp. 135–158) (assigned in Week 4)  How can you know if an organization is delivering the best possible care? Consider how health care professionals can help to change perceptions and make people more aware of the realities of the disease

Needs 3 reference sources above 2013 in APA.
While HIV/AIDS is still currently incurable, the prognosis for patients with this infectious disease has improved due to advancements in drug treatments. Consider the case of Kristy Aney. Kristy was diagnosed with HIV in 1992 and was told she would survive, at most, 10 more years. Despite unfavorable odds, Kristy is still alive 20 years later. Since her diagnosis, she has witnessed tremendous improvements in HIV/AIDS treatments which have helped patients live longer with fewer side effects. While she acknowledges that these drug treatments have kept her alive, she fears that improvements in drug therapy have led to more people becoming complacent about the disease (Idaho Statesmen, 2012). In fact, the number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States is higher than it has ever been (CDC, 2012). This poses the question: Is there a relationship between drug advancements, societal complacency, and infection?
To prepare:

  • Review Chapter 49 of the Arcangelo and Peterson text, as well as the Krummenacher et al. and Scourfield articles in the Learning Resources.
  • Reflect on whether or not the prevalence of HIV cases might be attributed to increased complacency due to more advanced drug treatment options for HIV/AIDS.
  • Consider how health care professionals can help to change perceptions and make people more aware of the realities of the disease.
  • Think about strategies to educate HIV positive patients on medication adherence, as well as safe practices to reduce the risk of infecting others.

With these thoughts in mind:
By Day 3
Post an explanation of whether or not you think the prevalence of HIV cases might be attributed to increased complacency due to more advanced drug treatment options. Then, explain how health care professionals can help to change perceptions and increase awareness of the realities of the disease. Finally, describe strategies to educate HIV positive patients on medication adherence, as well as safe practices to reduce the risk of infecting others.

Instructions: Imagine you are the Human Resources Manager and you are asked to create a presentation on three pieces of legislation that have been most important in defining the rights of management and unions. How many slides do you think you will need?*
1.    What is a union and why do they exist?
2.    Explain the three pieces of legislation that have been most important in defining the rights of management and unions.
3.    What is the process for establishing a union as the legal collective bargaining representative for employees?
4.    Describe the collective-bargaining process and how it differs for private sector and public sector employees.
5.    Summarize the ways unions differ globally.
6.    Research a strike in the news from the last three years and summarize it. What human resource management policies and programs were evaluated, planned, and implemented to comply with federal and state standards and regulations?
Requirements
You need to create a PowerPoint presentation for a Board of Directors (10–12 slides; speaker notes as needed to support assertions). Keep slides in the order of the questions given.
Be sure to support your assertions with evidence-based research, scholarly articles, and well-supported strategies that support your work. Although the use of APA citing is not required for this assignment, proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation are expected. Add sources to the last slide using APA format. Use of art and graphics suggested. See the Purdue Global writing center for the text rule on the amount of text that can go on a slide.
