Strategies for Change and Macro-Level Interventions

Strategies for Change and Macro-Level Interventions

· Identify one global issue currently in the news that might benefit from a macro-level intervention that includes a psychologist.
· Think about one bottom-up change strategy a psychologist might use to intervene and address the issue, one middle-out strategy, and one top-down strategy.
· For each strategy, consider which specific change strategy might be the most effective in addressing the issue you selected.
The Assignment (3–4 pages):
· Describe the global issue you selected.
· Determine the macro-level intervention (that includes a psychologist) that you assert will work best in this situation. Explain why you believe this intervention will work best.
· Provide examples of how a psychologist may use each of the following change strategies to address the situation:
· Bottom-up
· Middle-out
· Top-down
· Explain which change strategy or which combination of strategies you believe would be the most effective in addressing the situation and why.

Human Interactions

Human Interactions
Throughout the HSBE I and II courses, you have explored the biological, psychological, and sociological aspects of different phases of the human life span. You have explored life-span development theories that help to explain human behavior. You also have considered how the social environment influences individuals and their behavior.
Gathering facts about a client’s life span through the interview process is an important social work skill. This week, you practice this skill by interviewing an older adult using the questions in the Life Span Interview document available in this week’s resources. For this week’s Assignment you transform your interview notes into a narrative—that is, a life story—of the older adult you interviewed. You interweave within this narrative an analysis of the life story by applying person and the environment concepts to your understanding and interpretation of that story.

Submit a 3- to 4-page APA paper in which you provide a narrative analysis of the Life Span Interview you completed. The paper should:

  • Provide a chronological history of the individual’s major life experiences.
    • Identify specific biological, psychological and sociological influences that shaped the individual’s experience.
  • Analyze the individual’s experiences by applying theory and concepts learned throughout both HBSE courses.
  • Provide your reflection of the experience, both in interviewing the individual and analyzing their narrative.
  • Explain what you learned and how you will apply this to future social work practice.

Influence of Schools of Thought

Influence of Schools of Thought

Choose one of the schools of thought that was introduced in the readings and in the Current Psychological Schools of Thought  presentation—the  mental testing movement, functionalism, behaviorism, neobehaviorism, or  psychoanalysis—that you have not yet written about in another  discussion assignment. Remember that psychoanalysis refers to a comprehensive theory about human nature and not to the psychotherapeutic approach.

  • What new principles and values did the school of thought bring to psychology?
  • What new ideas, practices, and methods were introduced?
  • Discuss some of the key developments within the school of thought  over the course of time, in terms of research methods or other applied  methods.

Behaviorism and psychoanalysis

Discussion
Behaviorism and psychoanalysis  (or psychodynamic theory—not the psychotherapy approach) are sometimes  considered theoretically opposite. However, they share some  characteristics in common.
In a similar way, one could consider humanistic and cognitive  psychology to be quite different, yet there are areas of common ground  here as well. Thinking about similarities and differences of schools of  thought can help us understand their unique characteristics.
Choose two schools of thought (the mental testing movement,  behaviorism, psychoanalytic theory, humanistic psychology, cognitive  psychology, or psychobiology) and discuss how they differ. What  distinguishes the schools of thought from each other, in terms of their  principles, values, subject matter, research approaches, and applied  methods? Also address which factors they share with each other, using  the aforementioned attributes as they apply. Remember that we are  exploring comprehensive theories of human nature and behavior, not  psychotherapeutic techniques (for example, cognitive behavioral therapy  or psychoanalytic therapy).
