SEXUAL DISCONNECT

MODULE 4
M4 ASSIGNMENT 1 DISCUSSION
DISCUSSION: DOES IT MATTER?
DUE 8/11/18
This week, you learned about various theories surrounding the determination of one’s sexual orientation. In addition, you learned about some of the limitations and criticisms of the research.
· Explain briefly (in 1-2 paragraphs) your understanding of the research on origins of sexual orientation.
· Why is it important to understand what determines one’s sexual orientation? Consider ethical, legal, and social implications. If you do not think it is important to understand the origins, please explain.
· Based on what you have learned in your readings within the class and your textbook, make a hypothesis as to where you think the research might lead.
Write your initial response to each part in 3–4 paragraphs. Support your arguments with research, applying APA standards to citation of sources.
M4 ASSIGNMENT 2 SUBMISSION
ASSIGNMENT 2: SEXUAL DISCONNECT
DUE 8/15/18
Imagine that you are working as a counselor in an elementary school. A teacher has come to you, concerned that a student in her class might have been sexually abused. She explains that she became concerned when two of her 5-year old male students did not come out of the restroom after she called to them several times from the door. When she went in to check on them, she saw the boys facing each other, with Kyle’s pants around his ankles. Brandon was touching Kyle’s penis and both boys were laughing. In addition to her concern about abuse, the teacher is wondering if the boys could be gay.
· As the counselor, explain to the boys’ teacher whether their behavior is indicative of sexual abuse. Remember to reflect on the research you have learned about, and give details to demonstrate why you might come to that conclusion.
· How would you respond to the teacher’s question about the boys’ sexual orientation, based on research?

· What recommendations should you, as the counselor, give to the teacher?  Keep in mind research pertaining to the promotion of healthy sexual development by parents and schools.

Your response should be at least 3 pages long, not counting the cover page and reference page.

GENDER APPROPRIATE AND INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIORS

MODULE 5
M5 ASSIGNMENT 1
ASSIGNMENT1: LASA2: GENDER APPROPRIATE AND INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIORS
DUE 8/20/18
Recent headlines have sparked heated debate about whether boys should be allowed to dress as girls. For example, a 5-year-old boy in Seattle who enjoys things traditionally for girls, such as jewelry, the color pink, and dresses was supported and encouraged by his mother, who wrote a book about him called “My Princess Boy”. A J. Crew ad featured a mother painting her young boy’s toenails hot pink (CBS News, 2011 April 13). Reactions ranged from outrage and disbelief to support of the mothers.
On the flipside, girls who shun traditionally “girly things” such as dresses and flowers in favor of more traditional “boy things” such as watching or playing sports, rough-and-tumble play, and choosing boys as friends are often called tomboys.
For either sex, choosing to engage in activities traditionally reserved for a specific sex can result in teasing and accusations of homosexuality.
· Using research gathered from your textbook, online course content, and at least 1 research article, analyze the above scenarios.
· Are the behaviors discussed above (i.e., preferring things traditionally acceptable for a specific sex) indicative of homosexuality? Why or why not?
· Describe the psychological consequences (positive and negative) that might result from engaging in behaviors reserved for a specific sex?

· Develop an argument for or against concern that these children might be exhibiting a paraphilia.

· Which paraphilia(s) might apply and what criteria would you use based on the research?

· What, if any, intervention would you recommend to a parent whose little girl or boy expresses the desire to engage in behaviors typical of the opposite sex? If you do not believe intervention is necessary, explain why.

By the due date assigned, write an essay that is 3-5 pages in length. Also include a cover page and reference list. Remember to support your arguments with information drawn from the online content, the textbook, and other credible, scholarly sources to substantiate the points you are making.  Apply APA standards to for writing and citations to your work.

The paper should be  double-spaced 12-point  typescript, Times Roman font, with  1-inch margins  all around, and free from grammatical errors.

M5 ASSIGNMENT 2 DISCUSSION

ASSIGNMENT 2: DISCUSSION: SEXUAL HARASSMENT

DUE 8/19/18

The two legal “tests” that constitute sexual harassment are:

A. Quid pro quo, meaning failure to give in to unwanted sexual advances will threaten a person’s academic or employment career.

B. Behavior, which a “reasonable person” would deem a “hostile or offensive working environment.”

Some men complain that because the second point is too vague and potentially too broad, they fear being falsely accused of sexual harassment. They also say they worry that simply smiling and indulging in a little friendly flirting with a female co-worker can be misconstrued. Some women also acknowledge that they miss some of the playful camaraderie.

· Why is it important to have sexual harassment laws? If you do not believe these laws or necessary, explain your position.

· Do you think sexual harassment regulations have gone too far? Take a position—yes or no—and discuss it.

· How would you distinguish playful flirting from sexual harassment? Provide at least two scenarios that illustrate the difference.

Write your initial response to each part in 3–4 paragraphs. Support your arguments with research, applying APA standards to citation of sources.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Project
As you complete this project, think about the following:

  • What do we know about psychological disorders and their treatment?
  • What does research tell us about the most effective treatment for disorders?

At the end of this activity, you will:

  • Submit your course project dealing with psychological disorders and their treatment.

At the end of this module you will be required to submit a course project on psychological disorders and their treatment. You will be asked to choose one of the following:

  1. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

After choosing the one disorder on which to focus, make sure to:

  • Describe key features of the disorder, including its symptoms
  • Address the biopsychosocial explanations that could account for the development of that disorder

After choosing a disorder, read the associated module in the textbook and choose an appropriate therapy or therapies for that disorder from the following choices:

  1. Behavioral Therapy (you may choose combined Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy)
  2. Cognitive Therapy (you may choose combined Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy)

When applying your chosen therapy or therapies (i.e. an eclectic approach), make sure to:

  • Discuss and explain the specific methods of that therapy that would be utilized in the treatment of your chosen disorder.
  • Provide a rationale for the effectiveness of your type of treatment (i.e. present evidence that supports the effectiveness of that therapy for your chosen disorder.

From the information presented in the Psychology webtext and from your research in the library or onthe Web (i.e. make sure to incorporate what psychological research and studies have shown that would support your points raised in the paper), present your position and support it with credible sources of information using APA style citations and references. You are required to use at least three (3) references, to include the course webtext; the other references should come from psychological journal articles or from relevant psychologyspecific websites. Before submitting your paper, use the CourseProject page in chapter 5 of the webtext to check your paper against the rubric.
You are expected to present a minimum 750 word response. The paper should be submitted in a WORD document in 12 point; Times New Roman font. Given this guideline, your paper should be 3 – 4 pages in length; excluding the title page, abstract, and reference page. Refer to the APA Style guidelines document for information on the title page, abstract, and reference page.
