To prepare for this assignment:

  • Review Chapter 17 in your course text, Crisis Intervention Strategies, focusing on the stages of a natural disaster and the interventions that may be used within each stage.
  • Review the brochure, “Psychological First Aid for First Responders: Tips for Emergency and Disaster Response Workers.”The link is given in the syllabus. Think about in which stage(s) of a natural disaster Psychological First Aid may be used as an intervention.
  • Review the articles, “Applying Critical Consciousness: Culturally Competent Disaster Response Outcomes,” and “Trauma, Research, and EMDR: A Disaster Responder’s Wish List.” Note the cultural, ethical, and legal considerations related to the treatment of survivors of a natural disaster.
  • Read the “Flood” case study located in the Learning Resources area. Consider each stage of a disaster that occurs during and after the natural disaster in this particular scenario.
  • Think about interventions you would use in each of the stages of the disaster in the case study.
  • Reflect on any cultural, ethical, and/or legal issues that may be related to treatment of the survivors in the flood case study.

The assignment: (2–3 pages)

  • Using the case study, briefly describe the impact of each stage on the community described utilizing the 9 stage James and Gilliland (2013) model as follows:
    • Impact
    • Emergence/acute heroic stage
    • Inventory stage
    • Honeymoon stage
    • Avoidance phase
    • Adaptation phase
    • Disillusionment phase
    • Pathogenic to salutogenic shift
    • Restabilization/reconstruction (James, 2008)
  • For each stage, explain one intervention you would recommend using with survivors at that stage. Be specific and justify your selection based on information from the Learning Resources.
  • Explain any cultural, ethical, and legal issues related to the treatment of survivors of the disaster and the interventions you chose.
  • Week 9 Case:
    “Flood”
A small river town receives emergency notification for evacuation in preparation for a flood. The flood is a result of the river rising due to recent heavy rainfall.  Some families refuse to evacuate. Some families are busy wrapping their most valued possessions in plastic bags for safe keeping. Some families pack up as much as they can and drive out of town.
During the flood, emergency workers attempt to rescue the families who refuse to evacuate. Some families get in the boats and are taken to safety. Some continue to refuse to leave and drown in their homes.
After the flood waters recede, families return to their homes and begin the clean up efforts. Many houses are unsanitary and families are forced to stay in shelters or hotels in the next town.  Even with the additional precaution of wrapping items in plastic, not all family relics are salvageable.
Families already overburdened with financial obligations find themselves having to buy new clothing, furniture, and household items. Some homes are totally destroyed and families have to start over with nothing. Eleven lives are lost. The town governance suffers a loss of financial resources. While there is FEMA money, it does not fully recover the financial loss experienced by the survivors.
  • I have attached the template that has to be followed and also the case study…please ask any question.

Assignment 2: Developmental Stage Observation and Paper
This assignment brings developmental theory to life through live observation. You will have the opportunity to practice making service recommendations for a family based on the developmental prognosis of the individual you observe.
Tasks:
Conduct a forty-five- to sixty-minute live observation of a young adult. In addition to conducting an observation, you may also choose to interview the young adult. Keep in mind the following guidelines:
Only use first names or pseudonyms in your paper.
Do not observe someone who is related to you.
Do not attempt to engage in a counseling role; this assignment strictly involves only observing or interviewing.
Write a 3- to 4-page detailed description of the young adult’s physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development. What would developmental theorists say about the cognitive and the psychosocial development of the young adult? In addition, include the following information:
Date, time, location, and length of observation
Age, sex, and race or ethnicity
Defining physical characteristics
Estimated socioeconomic status (SES)
Description of interaction with caregivers
Daily routine
Description of other relevant behaviors exhibited during observation
Any other information
Note that SES has a profound impact on development. You can estimate the SES level based on neighborhood, clothing, or automobiles.
Be sure to provide detailed examples and use multiple developmental theories to support your observations. Consider multicontextual influences on development. Also, provide a developmental prognosis and make service recommendations, if needed. Justify your recommendations with information from the textbook, recommended readings, and/or peer-reviewed journal articles.
If you determine no services are needed, provide a justification. For example, if the young adult you observe is not meeting the developmental milestones associated with young adulthood, provide suggestions for services that would promote healthy development.
Note: Do not share a prognosis or service recommendations with the young adult. This information is for class purposes only. Also keep in mind that the more familiar you are with the relevant developmental theory for this age range, the more you will know what is significant during your observation.

Are energy drinks safe for use by young people? What are the safety implications?

Psychology homework help
Legal drugs, such as caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol, are often viewed as safer than prescription and illegal drugs. In particular, caffeine is viewed as safe by many people as it is not regulated, unlike nicotine and alcohol. Many “energy drinks” on the market, such as Red Bull, Monster, and Rockstar, contain high levels of caffeine, some in excess of four times the amount of caffeine as is present in a cup of coffee. Additionally some energy drinks contain herbals such as guarana and ginseng.
Andre, a 15-year-old high school student, has joined the track team. His teammates suggest that he take an “energy drink” before practice to give him an “edge.” Andre asks his mother to purchase some energy drinks for him the next time she goes to the store. Andre’s mother is concerned about the safety of using these drinks, as she has heard that they contain a lot of caffeine.
Using your textbook and the Argosy University online library resources, research the use of energy drinks by young people.
Respond to the following:
Are energy drinks safe for use by young people? What are the safety implications?
Should the purchase of energy drinks be regulated? Why or why not?
Write your initial response in 150–200 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
