Women’sRoles, Feminist Theory, and Social Work Practice

Discussion 1: Women’sRoles, Feminist Theory, and Social Work Practice
Feminism contributed to a vast number of changes in women’s lives over several decades. From the kitchen to the boardroom and back again if women choose, feminism has empowered women to examine how they want to live in this world and encouraged them to seek that life. Despite this progress, there are frequent events that still challenge women’s roles in society. What is your understanding of women’s roles in society? How might your biases and your research into feminist theory influence your work as a social worker?
For the Discussion, review this week’s resources. Search reputable sources, including the Walden Library and the Internet, in order to select an article that focuses on a current event involving the role of women in society. Then, select a feminist theory from this week’s reading and reflect on how it relates to social work practice. Think about how that has influenced your understanding of women’s roles in society and whether your understanding has changed as a result of your research. Finally, think about how the selected feminist theory and your understanding of women’s roles might inform your work with Tiffani in the Bradley Family video case.
Note to Students: Reputable sources include scholarly peer-reviewed journals, other scholarly texts, and websites hosted by educational institutions (.edu) and reputable organizations (.org).
·       Post abrief of the article you selected that focuses on a current event involving the role of women in society.
·       Then, provide a brief description of the feminist theory you selected and how it relates to social work practice and an explanation of how that feminist theory has influenced your understanding of women’s roles in society.
·       Finally, explain how feminist theory and views of women’s roles inform your next steps with Tiffani.

Discussion 1: Psychodynamic Theories in Social Work Practice
When was the last time you heard a baby cry? What causes did you attribute to the baby’s behavior? Was it time for a feeding or a diaper change? Maybe the baby just desired some human contact. No matter the cause, you likely recognized the baby’s attempt to communicate a basic human need. As that baby matures, strategies for communicating these needs will evolve, based on past experiences. If those experiences are negative, the individual will adapt, causing a change in how he or she relates to others and attempts to fulfill these basic needs in the future. However, those behavioral changes might not work to fulfill the complex needs that occur later in life. What effect might these behavioral changes have on future relationships and the individual’s ability to attain basic human needs in adulthood? Psychodynamic theory encompasses several theories that focus on how individuals behave as a result of internal developmental and external social conflicts. Those conflicts arise as a result of attempting to balance the needs, drives, and emotions that motivate human behavior. How might understanding adaptations in behavior, as well as the internal and external forces contributing to your clients’ concerns and their behavior, assist you in working with your clients? How might these psychodynamic theories be consistent with social work ethics and values in practice?
For this Discussion, review this week’s resources. Think about how experiences in infancy might affect future relationships and social/emotional functioning, as described by the psychodynamic theories discussed. Then, consider whether you find these theories consistent with social work ethics and values.
·       Post an explanation of how experiences in infancy might affect future relationships and social/emotional functioning as described by psychodynamic theories.
·       Then, explain whether you find these theories consistent with social work ethics and values, why or why not.

Discussion 2: Treating Sleep Disorders
During the course of treatment, a client stated that he has been unable to sleep successfully for the past year. His psychiatrist prescribed the sleep aid zolpidem. Because of the medication, he was immediately able to sleep. However, after 1 month of treatment, the client discovered euphoric episodes that occur if he resists falling asleep. The episodes induced waves of positive emotions and hallucinations, which he described as feeling “trippy.” The mental health professional recognized that the client is abusing the sleep aid. How should the mental health professional address this issue? How will this affect his current treatment plan?
For this Discussion,
Choose one of the following controversies involving special client populations and take a position:
o   Psychiatrists prescribing a potentially addictive sleep aid to adolescents
o   Psychiatrists prescribing sleep aids to clients in recovery from substance abuse
o   Psychiatrists prescribing sleep aids for conditions where the primary symptom is not insomnia
Then, conduct an Internet search or a Walden Library search for at least two peer-reviewed articles to support your position of your selected controversy.
Post an explanation of the controversy you selected. Formulate a position on the topic and support your stance with the peer-reviewed articles you found in your search.

Animal Evolution Paper Due by Email 5/12 2pm

Animal Evolution Paper Due by Email 5/12 2pm
Charles Darwin was one of the most influential scientific figures. For this project, you will create an evolutionary history of a modern day organism. You need to find the organism’s earliest ancestor, and create a timeline of how your organism may have evolved to what it is today. You should also be able to describe certain adaptations your organism acquired and has that allowed and helped its evolution.
Select one of the following organisms:
ElephantBirds
HorseShark
TigerRhinoceros
WhaleGiraffe
CrocodileMan
Dog
Bear
OR you may choose a different organism that you feel strongly about, but please get it approved by me first.
For this paper, you need to use reputable sources (try and stay away from .com websites), and at least three different sources that give you information about your animal. PLEASE CITE THROUGHOUT YOUR PAPER. I will take off several points for improper citations and no works cited/bibliography page.
Format: 4 pages long, double spaced, with a work cited page (5th page). Please use Times New Roman size 12 font, and 1 inch margins on all four sides of the paper. I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY PAPERS THAT ARE SHORTER THAN FOUR PAGES LONG. This is 10% of your grade and you need to work hard on it- I will not be grading it as easily as the last paper.
Your paper should address the following content (10 points, 10%):
•The earliest ancestor of your organism and the intermediate forms that led to the modern day animal (2 points)
•Compare and contrast modern and intermediate species adaptations (2 points)
•Compare and contrast the environmental conditions that influenced your organisms evolution (i.e. any ice ages etc., 2 points)
•List modern relatives and their adaptations (2 points) i.e. wolves are a modern relative of the dog
•Give a direct timeline of the evolution of your organism’s evolution (2 points) – this can either be a picture that shows all the different organisms your modern day organism evolved from (with dates) or you may write out the timeline in words

Validity

  • Review the articles by Fergus (2013), Kosson, et al. (2013) and Mathieu, Hare, Jones, Babiak, & Neumann (2013). Analyze the information presented in these articles on factor analysis and describe how it is used to validate the constructs of the instruments.Application One: An Ethical and Professional Quandry
  •  Case Exhibit 1.2  describe the ethical issues specific to the scenario you selected. Include an analysis of the relevant principles from Standard 9 in the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.
  • Taking on the role of the psychologist or counselor in the chosen scenario, describe how you might respond to the challenge you selected and provide a brief rationale for your decision.
  • The scenario is this: In the midst of taking a  test battery for a learning disability a distraught 20 year old female college student confides a terrifying secert to the psychlogist. The clientjust discovered that her 25 year old brother, who died 3 months ago was most likely a pedophile. She shows the psychologist naked photos of  children posing in her brothers bedroom. To complicate matters the brother lived with his mother who is still unaware of his cocncealed sexual diviancy. Question is the psychologist obligated to report this to law enforcement.
  • Application Two: Evidence-Based Medicine
Summarize Youngstrom’s (2013) recommendations for linking assessment directly to clinical decision making in evidence-based medicine.
  • Elaborate on each of Youngstrom’s recommendations by providing practical examples that illustrate the relevance of the recommendations in a clinical setting.
  • Application Three: Selecting Valid Instruments
  • Create a research hypothesis or brief clinical case scenario in which you must select an instrument to measure intolerance for uncertainty.
  • Use the information in the Fergus (2013) article to support which measure to use
