Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has received a lot of media coverage in the past ten years. One of the things most misunderstood about the disorder is the treatment. Children (and adults) afflicted with ADHD are often treated with stimulant drugs. Parents are often hesitant about giving their children these stimulant medications. Treating hyperactivity with a drug that increases activity appears paradoxical.
Using the Argosy University online library resources, find at least two peer-reviewed journal articles that explain the effect of stimulant drugs (such as Adderall or Ritalin—amphetamine or methylphenidate) on the brains of those with ADHD.
Create a brochure that explains the benefits of using stimulant medications and addresses the concerns of parents of children with ADHD. Be sure to use language appropriate for the audience. Include the following in your brochure:

  • Summarize the findings of the two articles.
  • Explain the effect that these drugs have in the brain.
  • Explain the concerns of using stimulant drugs to treat ADHD.

Develop a 2-3-page brochure in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M2_A2.doc.

Professionals must work with families to understand cultural and linguistic characteristics specific to each child. This is critical in determining whether a child’s experiences are typical of someone coming from a different background as opposed to a true disability. These issues can be complex as exceptionalities are seen across cultures as well.
Review the following scenario:
Kayin is an eight-year-old boy in the third grade. His teacher, Mr. Bledsoe, has been very concerned about his problems with reading. He also has difficulty socially, and seems withdrawn, with few, if any, friends. Kayin avoids eye contact with most people, but this is more pronounced with adults. He also becomes very frustrated at times, crying and ripping up his work.Kayin has been enrolled in the same school since kindergarten. However, Mr. Bledsoe knows that his family is originally from Nigeria and they return every summer to visit family. Although Kayin’s parents speak English fairly fluently, they have a pronounced African accent. Mr. Bledsoe remembers learning that it is an act of respect to avoid eye contact with adults in some cultures, but he cannot remember whether this is true of Nigerian culture. Mr. Bledsoe has been hesitant to raise the possibility of a disability because he does not know how much of Kayin’s struggles can be attributed to growing up in a bicultural and bilingual home or to Kayin’s own personality.Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research cultural differences related to children with exceptionalities. It may also be useful to consult CultureGrams in the online library for more information on cultures in Nigeria.
Reflect on your readings and respond to the following:

  • What steps should Mr. Bledsoe take to address Kayin’s challenges?
  • What professionals might he include to help Kayin?
  • What further information does Mr. Bledsoe and his colleagues need to best help Kayin? Where can he find this information?
  • How should Mr. Bledsoe approach the issue of cultural differences with Kayin’s parents?
  • What ethical dilemma(s) might Mr. Bledsoe face when considering the values, beliefs, and behaviors common in the culture of Kayin’s family within the context of the general American culture?

Write your initial response in 300–500 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

The importance of families cannot be overstated in dealing with children with exceptionalities. Despite the high incidence of exceptionalities such as learning disabilities and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, families often feel isolated and experience significant stress.
Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research the roles of families and the positive and negative impact children with disabilities can have on the family.
Be sure to review the following article from the readings for this module:

  • Dyson, L. (2010). Unanticipated effects of children with learning disabilities on their families. Learning Disability Quarterly, 33, 43–55. (EBSCO AN: 48842496) http://search.proquest.com.libproxy.edmc.edu/docview/233085314

Based on your research, address the following:

  • Provide a brief overview of the main points of the article.
  • Describe at least two things you learned from the article.
  • Describe the potential challenges and benefits for families who have one or more children with exceptionalities.
  • Evaluate the influence of the cultural background of children with high-incidence exceptionalities (such as learning disabilities) on how they are approached by the following:
    • Their families
    • Their schools
    • Their communities
  • Describe the ecocultural perspective. Based on your readings, describe supports or interventions you would recommend from this perspective. Be sure to address families, schools, and communities.

Write a 3–5-page paper in Word format. Be sure to include separate title and reference pages. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M2_A2.doc.

1. Discussion: Unified Theory
Think about all the theories you have studied in the course. What is your opinion on whether a unified theory of personality is possible? Do you think such a theory would improve the field? Do you have any research that supports your argument?
2. Discussion: Technological Influences on Development
The average child in the United States watches four hours of television per day. As a result of this information, the impact of television as a developmental influence is a concern. However, the explosion of the internet and cellphones has the potential to affect the development of entire generations before research can even scratch the surface of its impact. Digital technology has extended the influence of peer groups to 24 hours per day. Given the influence of peers and schools as agents of socialization, what implications does this 24/7 access to these agents have on development?
In your initial post, select one concept regarding peers and one concept regarding schools, and assess each for its potential positive and negative impacts on development.
