Discussion: Qualitative Research Questions
Research questions that lend themselves to a qualitative approach often address questions about how people construct meaning. In this way, qualitative research questions set the stage for open-ended, inductive inquiry.
For this Discussion, review the case study entitled, “Social Work Research: Program Evaluation.” Consider the kinds of questions that inform a qualitative approach. Think about the quantitative method described in the case study and consider methods you might use to investigate the effectiveness of a program from a qualitative perspective.
By Day 3
Post your explanations of the following:

  • What kinds of research questions lead to a qualitative approach?
  • If you chose to conduct quantitative research in your Week 4 proposal, how might you reframe the research question in a way that lends itself to a qualitative approach?
  • If you focused on a qualitative proposal in Week 4, describe the qualitative research question and explain the rationale for choosing a qualitative approach.
  • Be sure to explain how you might collect the data.
  • Consider which qualitative method (case study, grounded theory, ethnographic research, cross-sectional research, feminist research, or participatory action research) would be most suitable for answering the research question.

Describe the impact of our current digital age on the concept of self , including the impact of social media on the way we perceive ourselves

Prior to beginning work on this discussion please read Chapter Nine of your course text, and review sections 2.5, 3.1, and 3.2 from previous chapters.  Also read the Palacios, Echaniz, Fernandez and Ortiz de Barron (2015) article Personal Self-Concept and Satisfaction with Life in Adolescence, Youth, and Adulthood and the Dodge, Barab, Stuckey, Warren, Heiselt, & Stein (2008) article Children’s Sense of Self: Learning and Meaning in the Digital Age.
The concept of self is core to the study of personality, and most of the theories we have studied in this course postulate some idea about what constitutes the self. This week, we are looking at the self-psychology model which presents several theories regarding how we perceive ourselves and how that is expressed in our personalities. In your initial post, provide a brief overview of the two theories of self that resonate the most with you and explain why you relate to these theories. Be sure to identify the principal theorists associated with your two chosen theories.
Describe the impact of our current digital age on the concept of self , including the impact of social media on the way we perceive ourselves.
Explain whether or not our perceptions of self are evolving because of social media, including the idea of a digital self. Provide examples of how this might be happening or provide a rationale as to why you believe it is not happening. Your initial post should be a minimum of 300 words and should include references to both of the assigned articles.

Assignment
APA 350 words
Who we are today is in large part defined by our cultures, societal connections, customs, and morals we learned as children. In our life journey we continually redefine our identities as we encounter more experiences and more people.
For this discussion post, discuss the concept of “culture.” Include the following:

  1. How would you define “culture”? Discuss all the various ways you can consider culture (personal, geographic, organizational, etc.).
  2. With which cultures do you most identify? What are the internal and external characteristics of your culture(s)?
  3. What cultural norms did you learn as a child? What stereotypes are connected to those cultures?

What is ethnocentrism?

This assignment focuses on the concept of ethnocentrism, the idea that others can be judged through the lens of one’s own cultural group, which is superior to another (Sherrill, 2003). Ethnocentric

This assignment focuses on the concept of ethnocentrism, the idea that others can be judged through the lens of one’s own cultural group, which is superior to another (Sherrill, 2003). Ethnocentric beliefs are often the foundation for many diversity-related arguments in political, religious, and racial discussions. Ethnocentrism can often be seen at the center of arguments about the moral foundations of our society, with each side arguing based on their own long-held cultural beliefs. Others, however, argue that morality is culturally relative and accordingly, so are our beliefs. As such, rules regarding right and wrong, what is moral or just, would be based on our cultural backgrounds.
In your discussion this week, you explored your own cultural dimensions. For this assignment, think about your longest held cultural beliefs, considering how your personal background has influenced who you are today. Consider all of the cultural associations you may have now and in the past including your customs and traditions such as dress, music, dance, family stories, holidays, and celebrations.
Instructions:
First, take a moment to complete the New York Times quiz “How Y’all, Youse, and You Guys Talk (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.” to see how dialect can reflect your cultural background.
Then, write a 1320-1650 word paper (not including the title page) about how ethnocentrism and cultural relativism affect how you see yourself and others.
Specifically address:

  1. Definitions (can be in your introductory paragraphs):
    1. What do you mean by “culture”?
    2. What is ethnocentrism?
    3. What is cultural relativism?
  2. What cultural group(s) do you belong to?
    1. Who or what has influenced you?
    2. What are the cultural norms associated with your cultural groups?
    3. What customs and traditions such as dress, music, dance, family stories, holidays, and celebrations are associated with your culture?
  3. Analyze your perspectives.
    1. What of your perspectives are rooted in ethnocentric beliefs?
    2. What of your perspectives are based on cultural relativism?
    3. Give at least one example of when you have been involved with someone judging you in an ethnocentric manner.

You are strongly encouraged to use the APA format template (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. to guide you while writing your paper. Include a properly formatted title page. For clarity, divide your paper into sections with properly formatted section headings. Be sure to include an introductory paragraph stating what your paper is about and a conclusion section at the end giving the high points of the paper. This assignment does not require an abstract.
