Explain how to properly diagnose skin wounds in frail elders, including how to distinguish between a colonization and infection.

Assignment 1: Application – Diagnosing and Treating Skin Wounds

Skin wounds are sometimes challenging for health care providers to diagnose and treat as many have similar presentations. For advanced practice nurses, being able to identify various types of skin wounds, including whether a wound is a colonization or an infection, is critical because it impacts recommended patient care. In your role, you must be able to evaluate skin wounds, determine the diagnosis, and develop an appropriate treatment and management plan according to current evidence-based guidelines.

To prepare:

  • Review Chapter 45 of the Flaherty and Resnick text, as well as the Burr article in this week’s Learning Resources.
  • Consider how to properly diagnose skin wounds in frail elders, including how to distinguish between a colonization and infection.
  • Select a type of skin wound, such as bumps, bruises, shingles, herpes, bullous pemphigoid, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, etc. Research the guidelines for treatment of the skin wound you selected. Reflect on how you would treat and/or dress this wound.
  • Think about factors that might contribute to the development of the skin wound you selected. Consider strategies for the prevention and improvement of this type of wound.

To complete:

Write a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:

  • Explain how to properly diagnose skin wounds in frail elders, including how to distinguish between a colonization and infection.
  • Describe the type of skin wound you selected.
  • Explain how you would treat and/or dress this wound based on guidelines for treatment.
  • Explain factors that might contribute to the development of the skin wound you selected. Include strategies for the prevention and improvement of this type of wound.

 Data Analysis—Small Group Discussion

As a nurse engaged in evidence-based practice, it is important to recognize how statistics and other data analysis tools are used to generate and assess evidence. Most nurses need only a foundational understanding of statistical tools and terminology to understand the majority of research studies. As a nurse, you should be able to recognize the most commonly used statistical tests, how and when they are used, and how significance is determined.

In this Discussion, you examine different types of statistics and statistical tests, when and why these particular tests would be selected for use, and, most importantly, what the results indicate. To this end, you will be assigned to a group by Day 1 of this week. Each group will be assigned one of the five chapters listed in this week’s Learning Resources and will develop a study sheet on their chapter that will be shared with the other groups.

  • Review the information in your assigned chapter.
  • As a group, develop a 1-page study sheet that includes the following:
    • The key concepts of the chapter: Focus on the basic concepts that are important for nurses to understand as they review research studies.
    • A description of the statistical methods covered in the chapter, what they measure, and under what circumstances they are used. Identify examples of how the statistical methods have been used in research studies.
    • An explanation of the key statistical tests and how they measure significance (if applicable).

The most commonly used inferential statistical tests: An explanation of the key statistical tests and how they measure significance (if applicable).

  • t-tests
  • analysis of variance (ANOVA)
  • chi-square tests

This week, you are introduced to the process of data analysis. You examine different types of statistics and statistical tests and when they are used. You also assess how to interpret the results of statistical tests.

-For this discussion post, we will…

  • Analyze the use of various statistical tests for analyzing data.
  • Assess the significance of nurses understanding statistical methods

Inferential Statistics Study Guide

  1. Inferential Statistics, which is based on the laws of probability.
    • A description of the statistical methods covered in the chapter
    • what they measure
    • under what circumstances they are used
    • Identify examples of how the statistical methods have been used in research studies.
  2. Sampling Distributions
  3. Estimates of Parameters
  4. Levels of Significance
  5. The most commonly used inferential statistical tests: An explanation of the key statistical tests and how they measure significance (if applicable).
    • t-tests
    • analysis of variance (ANOVA)
    • chi-square tests
  6. The process of testing correlations

Explain types and levels of threat posed to the United States by the health problem faced by this country.

HCA 347 International Health Care

Country Project Grading Criteria

HCA 347: COUNTRY PROJECT INFORMATION

1. A country has been assigned to you. Familiarize yourself with the culture, people and health system of your country through different publicly available resources including journals, books, published reports, foundation/project websites, technical reports, conference proceedings and datasets. All sources should be properly cited and referenced in APA style when used.

2. Describe the healthcare system of this country. Discuss type of delivery system adopted and how it is financed. Include an overview of access, cost and quality of care under this system. Make a brief comparison between this country and the United States on the basis of important aspects of a health care including major challenges faced by the US healthcare system.

3. Identify a major health problem that is facing this country: Discuss in detail whether or not this problem is global or specific to this country alone.

4. Discuss the extent of the health problem and present the social, cultural, economic and any other relevant factors that you think contributed to the problem in this country. Explain types and levels of threat posed to the United States by the health problem faced by this country.

5. Discuss how the healthcare system of your project country is equipped in solving this problem.

6. Design a solution to this problem by proposing healthcare system changes that will aid in improving the quality of care and prevention of this health problem.

Use credible, published sources of information for your research. These may include:

· Country Government websites

· International Agencies’ websites (e.g. World Health Organization, etc.)

· Published reports (e.g. Health Systems in Transitions Reports, etc.)

· Journal articles

· Course textbook

· Other books

· Personal interviews (if possible) with natives of your project country

A minimum of SIX different sources of information and data is required. All resources should be appropriately cited and referenced using the APA format.

The following website commonly referred to as Purdue OWL is a very useful guide for using APA format. Go to: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/

What are some factors that make some people healthy and others ill?

What are some factors that make some people healthy and others ill? Healthy People 2020 identifies five determinants of health that influence the health of individuals and populations. Healthy People 2020 describes them as “a range of personal, social, economic, and environmental factors that influence health status” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2014, About Determinants of Health, para. 1). Determinants fall into five categories including: (a) policy making, (b) social factors, (c) health services, (d) individual behavior, and (e) biology and genetics.

  • Choose one of the five determinants. In your post, describe this determinant and its importance.
  • Discuss how this determinant relates to one intervention from the Public Health Intervention Wheel (Nies & McEwen, 2015, pp. 14–15).
