NURS-6052N-37, Essent of Evidence-Based Pract.2017
Discussion:-1
Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice
In your practice as a nurse, you may use procedures and methods that did not necessarily originate in evidence, but instead were derived from informal and unwritten conventions, traditions, and observations. While these techniques may have merit, practices are constantly being updated and contradicted by information from scholarly research studies and professional guidelines. This new information serves as “evidence” for revising practices to improve outcomes across health care.
Based on this evidence, you can formulate a question. In this Discussion, you consider the use of evidence-based practice in your own organization and formulate a question that you will need to answer for your portfolio project. This is called a PICOT question. You will also investigate strategies for overcoming barriers to implementing evidence-based practice (EBP).
To prepare:
Consider a recent clinical experience in which you were providing care for a patient.
Determine the extent to which the care that you provided was based on evidence and research findings or supported only by your organization’s standard procedures. How do you know if the tasks were based on research?
What questions have you thought about in a particular area of care such as a procedure or policy?
Review Chapter 2, pages 31–34 on “Asking Well worded Clinical Questions” in Polit & Beck and consult the resource from the Walden Student Center for Success: Clinical Question Anatomy & examples of PICOT questions (found in this week’s Learning Resources). Formulate your background questions and PICOT question.
Reflect on the barriers that might inhibit the implementation of evidence-based practice in your clinical environment.
Review the article “Adopting Evidence-Based Practice in Clinical Decision Making” in this week’s Learning Resources. Select one of the barriers described that is evident in your organization and formulate a plan for overcoming this barrier.

In a formal paper of 1,000-1,250 words you will discuss the work of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative on the Future of Nursing and the Institute of Medicine research that led to the IOM report, “Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.” Identify the importance of the IOM “Future of Nursing” report related to nursing practice, nursing education and nursing workforce development. What is the role of state-based action coalitions and how do they advance goals of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action?
Explore the Campaign for Action webpage (you may need to research your state’s website independently if it is not active on this site): http://campaignforaction.org/states
Review your state’s progress report by locating your state and clicking on one of the six progress icons for: education, leadership, practice, interpersonal collaboration, diversity, and data. You can also download a full progress report for your state by clicking on the box located at the bottom of the webpage.
In a paper of 1,000-1,250 words:

  2. Identify the importance of the IOM “Future of Nursing” report related to nursing practice, nursing education and nursing workforce development.
  3. What is the role of state-based action coalitions and how do they advance goals of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action?

Summarize two initiatives spearheaded by your state’s action coalition. In what ways do these initiatives advance the nursing profession? What barriers to advancement currently exist in your state? How can nursing advocates in your state overcome these barriers?

NURS6351 Discussion Response #1: Ethical and Legal Parameters for Nurse Educators

2.    Ask a probing question, substantiated with additional background information or research.

Discussion #1

Ethical Challenge: Providing education to a student who the instructor does not feel is choosing the correct career pathway
The role of the nurse educator is one that should be taken seriously and with high regard. As a nursing educator you are to empower your students to be the best medical practitioner possible. What happens however when you have a student whom you feel has chosen the wrong career path? I can’t say that a person’s single opinion should not make a definitive weigh in on a person’s true potential; but often a skilled educator can identify those who will thrive in the profession and those who will have a more difficult transition. Salminen et.al. (2013) discuss the educator’s professional role and how ethical principles and knowledge impact their ability to teach.  What was confirmed from that study is that the more knowledgeable the educator the better impact they have with students regarding conflict as discussed and struggles revolving around the student interaction.
Ethically, it is not recommended that we use our feelings to determine a student’s potential; but rather utilize the clear black and white objectives that define successful completion of any clinical/nursing rotation.
Questions that would come as a result of this situation would be:
1.   How do I challenge my student to put forth their best effort when I feel a certain way about a student?
2.   How do I provide education to a student who I feel doesn’t appear to thrive in nursing without bias?
3.   How can I encourage a student to continue on in a program when I do not think this career path is a good fit for them?
4.   Is it my place to recommend a different career pathway if their test grades are excellent but their personality at the bedside and their ability to provide passionate care is weak?
