Your task in this activity>>>> is to create a proposal for a culturally competent HIV prevention program for a different culture (((African American))).
Example:
>>>>This is an example of culturally competent practice and an effective community-based health psychology intervention.
>>>>>Dr. Eduardo Morales is a health psychologist who received the American Psychological Association’s Award for Distinguished Contributions to Institutional Practice in 2009. He is the executive director of AGUILAS (Spanish for “eagles”), a San Francisco HIV prevention program developed and run by Latino gay and bisexual men. The program is specifically designed to reduce cultural barriers, isolation, and marginalization of men in the Latino gay and bisexual community. As opposed to using impersonal mass mailings, the program reaches out to its target community through person to person contacts at community events, such as street fairs. Representatives of AGUILAS partner with businesses in the community to sponsor events that will attract the target population. Participants bond over dinner together before participating in support and education groups that might otherwise seem threatening or uninviting. Risk reduction counseling is done through evidenced based motivational interviewing approaches that are offered in English and Spanish. Grant monies subsidize these services, which are offered on a sliding scale. Program evaluation data show that whereas the San Francisco 2010 HIV Prevention Plan reports that there are three new cases of HIV infections every day, only three persons total converted among AGUILAS participants between 2002-2009.

Assignment 2: Traumatic Brain Injury: Jefferson’s Case
When new parents are expecting a baby, they rarely consider the possibility that the baby could have significant challenges. For those who have children with severe, multiple disabilities, planning for the future is a critical, lifelong process and requires considerable investments of time and effort, while potentially causing significant stress to the parents. With advances in our understanding, there are many more resources available to children and families than there were previously.
Review the following scenario:
Jefferson is a six-year-old boy in kindergarten. He has suffered from cerebral palsy and a severe seizure disorder since he was an infant, resulting in significant physical and cognitive impairment. Although he has received services and support through early childhood intervention (ECI) services, as he enters formal schooling, his parents have become increasingly concerned about his future. Jefferson spends most of his time in a wheelchair and uses a special touchscreen augmentative communication device. In addition to their concerns about the future, Jefferson’s father also harbors considerable guilt that he or his wife might have caused their son’s disabilities.
Based on your research, respond to the following:
Summarize research related to the influence of nature versus nurture on the cause of Jefferson’s disabilities.
Provide a hypothesis of Jefferson’s likely prognosis. What supports or services might maximize this outcome?
Evaluate what Jefferson’s future might have been if he were being raised in the U.S. in the 1940s.
Write a 3–5-page paper in Word format (not counting the title and reference pages). Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Be sure to include a title page and reference page, also in APA format.

To prepare for this assignment:

  • Review Chapter 17 in your course text, Crisis Intervention Strategies, focusing on the stages of a natural disaster and the interventions that may be used within each stage.
  • Review the brochure, “Psychological First Aid for First Responders: Tips for Emergency and Disaster Response Workers.”The link is given in the syllabus. Think about in which stage(s) of a natural disaster Psychological First Aid may be used as an intervention.
  • Review the articles, “Applying Critical Consciousness: Culturally Competent Disaster Response Outcomes,” and “Trauma, Research, and EMDR: A Disaster Responder’s Wish List.” Note the cultural, ethical, and legal considerations related to the treatment of survivors of a natural disaster.
  • Read the “Flood” case study located in the Learning Resources area. Consider each stage of a disaster that occurs during and after the natural disaster in this particular scenario.
  • Think about interventions you would use in each of the stages of the disaster in the case study.
  • Reflect on any cultural, ethical, and/or legal issues that may be related to treatment of the survivors in the flood case study.

The assignment: (2–3 pages)

  • Using the case study, briefly describe the impact of each stage on the community described utilizing the 9 stage James and Gilliland (2013) model as follows:
    • Impact
    • Emergence/acute heroic stage
    • Inventory stage
    • Honeymoon stage
    • Avoidance phase
    • Adaptation phase
    • Disillusionment phase
    • Pathogenic to salutogenic shift
    • Restabilization/reconstruction (James, 2008)
  • For each stage, explain one intervention you would recommend using with survivors at that stage. Be specific and justify your selection based on information from the Learning Resources.
  • Explain any cultural, ethical, and legal issues related to the treatment of survivors of the disaster and the interventions you chose.
  • Week 9 Case:
    “Flood”
A small river town receives emergency notification for evacuation in preparation for a flood. The flood is a result of the river rising due to recent heavy rainfall.  Some families refuse to evacuate. Some families are busy wrapping their most valued possessions in plastic bags for safe keeping. Some families pack up as much as they can and drive out of town.
During the flood, emergency workers attempt to rescue the families who refuse to evacuate. Some families get in the boats and are taken to safety. Some continue to refuse to leave and drown in their homes.
After the flood waters recede, families return to their homes and begin the clean up efforts. Many houses are unsanitary and families are forced to stay in shelters or hotels in the next town.  Even with the additional precaution of wrapping items in plastic, not all family relics are salvageable.
Families already overburdened with financial obligations find themselves having to buy new clothing, furniture, and household items. Some homes are totally destroyed and families have to start over with nothing. Eleven lives are lost. The town governance suffers a loss of financial resources. While there is FEMA money, it does not fully recover the financial loss experienced by the survivors.
  • I have attached the template that has to be followed and also the case study…please ask any question.
