Assignment: Reflection Essay: Positive Social Change—An Evolving Perspective
As demonstrated in the first week of this course, there is no one single definition for terms such as social responsibilityand social change. These are complex concepts determined by multiple factors. You may now recognize some of the key contributing factors that lead to social responsibility in action. Has your initial understanding of social responsibility and social change evolved through your work in this course? Have the shared comments of colleagues as well as the Learning Resources provided further insight into the value of working collectively to achieve social change?
In this Reflection Essay, you reflect on how this course has influenced your overall understanding and approach to positive social change.
To prepare for this Assignment:

  • Review Walden University’s General Education Learning Outcome “Change” in the Course Project Overview and Guidelines document in this week’s resources. Consider how the General Education DEEP-C Model contributed to your ability to discover and evaluate ideas from different perspectives, and is instrumental in your progress toward achieving personal goals and effecting positive social change.
  • Revisit definitions of social responsibility shared in the Week 1 Discussion in light of all the information you have considered throughout this course.
  • Read Chapters 11 and 12 in the Loeb course text.

Write a 3- or 4-paragraph essay in which you briefly analyze the importance and feasibility of working toward social change. Address the following:

  • Describe how your perspective has evolved or changed through this course and how you believe it will continue to evolve after the course.
  • Explain how this experience has influenced your ability to create positive social change beyond the term of this course.
  • If you choose to engage in the social issue you researched in this course, address how you will prevent burnout and engage others in your cause.

Provide at least three references using proper APA format.

What stood out as being most important in his/her life?

Week 5

Identify a senior citizen and schedule an hour to talk with him or her face to face. Be sure to tell the person that you are completing the interview as part of a class assignment and that the content of the interview is completely confidential (no names will be used). Conduct an informal interview, focusing on the participant’s developmental history.
Consider the following:

  • Family history and background
  • School environment and educational experience
  • Employment and volunteer work
  • Social relationships
  • Partnerships and parenthood
  • Significant life events
  • Significant life transitions
  • Memorable experiences

In addition to interview data, you may also obtain information from significant others, behavioral observations during the interview, and records (e.g. school reports, family albums, diaries, etc).
Part I: Document the questions you asked and the participant’s responses. This is your interview ‘transcript’ that will be turned in along with your reflective paper.
Part II: Write about 1,050 words reflecting on the interview. In your paper, include information on the following:

  • What were the most notable aspects of the interview? What topics did your interviewee respond strongly to and why?
  • What were the most surprising aspects of the interview? Did any of the interviewee’s responses surprise you? Explain.
  • What stood out as being most important in his/her life? Describe the interviewee’s most significant or meaningful life events.
  • What life transitions did your interviewee discuss? Did he/she disclose any specific strategies for coping with difficult life transitions? Describe the interviewee’s most challenging transitions.
  • Explain what you learned from this experience.

Use the literature in gerontology, wisdom and successful aging to supplement your paper and support your points.
Include at least three references from scholarly sources.
Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

How do descriptive research questions differ from questions of relationship?

THE RESEARCH QUESTION, LITERATURE REVIEW, AND RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

Catherine: You must use the “required reading material (incorporated) in this email.
The Research Question, Literature Review, and Research Hypothesis
Case Assignment
Newton, Bower, and Williams (2004) outline the process of “devising and revising” a research question, be it descriptive, relational, or comparative. After reading their paper, write a three-page paper that addresses the following:
1.    How do descriptive research questions differ from questions of relationship? From questions of comparison?
2.    How should a researcher determine if prior research exists on the intended research topic?
3.    What factors should be used to gauge the quality of previous research? Why are these important in making this assessment?
4.    Should formulation of a research question precede or follow consultation with the scholarly literature? Please explain.
Assignment Expectations

  • You are expected to consult the scholarly literature in preparing your paper; you are also expected to incorporate relevant background readings.
  • Your paper should be written in your own words. This will enable me to assess your level of understanding.
  • In order to earn full credit, you must clearly show that you have read all required background materials.
  • Cite your references in the text of all papers and on the reference list at the end. For examples, look at the way the references are listed in the modules and on the background reading list.
  • Proofread your paper to be sure grammar and punctuation are correct and that each part of the assignment has been addressed clearly and completely.
Your assignment will not be graded until you have submitted an Originality Report with a Similarity Index (SI) score <20% (excluding direct quotes, quoted assignment instructions, and references). Papers not meeting this requirement by the end of the session will receive a score of 0 (grade of F). Do keep in mind that papers with a lower SI score may be returned for revisions. For example, if one paragraph accounting for only 10% of a paper is cut and pasted, the paper could be returned for revision, despite the low SI score. Please use the report and your SI score as a guide to improve the originality of your work.
