Assignment 3: Diagnostic Case Reports
Access the Faces of Abnormal Psychology website. There, you will see twelve different disorders listed. For this module, view the following disorders:

  • Major Depression
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia)

After clicking a disorder, click the Diagnostic Overview tab in the left column. This will cover the major diagnostic features of the disorder. After that, click the DSM-5 Features tab. You can then go though the Case History, Interview, and Treatment sections on the website. Finally, in the Assessment section, you can complete an optional multiple-choice quiz. You have to write a case report for each case study. You should use the format provided on the web page. There is a sample report that you can also view by clicking the link in the upper-right corner.

  • Outline the major symptoms of this disorder.
  • Briefly outline the client’s background (age, race, occupations, etc.).

Observations

  • Describe any symptoms or behaviors that are inconsistent with the diagnosis.
  • Provide any information that you have about the development of this disorder.

Diagnosis

  • Did you observe any evidence of general medical conditions that might contribute to the development of this disorder?
  • Did you observe any evidence of psychosocial and environmental problems that might contribute to this disorder?
  • As per your observations, what is the client’s overall level of safety regarding potential harm to self or others (suicidality or homicidality)?
  • What cross-cultural issues, if any, affect the differential diagnosis?

  • In your opinion, what are the appropriate short-term goals of this intervention?

Assignment 2: Competency Restoration
If criminal defendants are deemed incompetent to face a trial, they have the right to have their competency restored since they cannot be released without having a trial and they cannot be held indefinitely without being given the opportunity to become competent. Accordingly, it is important to state how they will be restored to competency.
Create a 3- to 4-page paper in a Microsoft Word document answering the two parts of this assignment.
Part 1:
CST has long been a sought-out legal procedure. Identify a landmark case decision that has played a factor in this process and address the following issues:

  • Explain the process of competency restoration.
  • Describe why the process of competency restoration is important.
  • Discuss one landmark case decision that has played a role in the process of restoration.

Part 2:
Elaborate on your discussion by including the process of restoration in the forensic arena.
In your report, address the following:

  • Identify the appropriate APA ethical codes and the specialty guidelines for forensic psychologists that may apply to the process of restoration.
  • Examine the limits to confidentiality.
  • Identify the factors that might impede competency restoration.

Part II
After reading and summarizing the research article, use the four original cultural dimensions to compare your cultural group (YCG) with a foreign cultural group of your choice. This cultural group will be referred to as the selected cultural group (SCG) throughout the various parts of this class project. Note that YCG is defined as the group that you feel has most influenced your development and identity. For most of you, YCG will be US mainstream culture. However, some of you may feel that you are most influenced by a different cultural group. For example, if you moved from Vietnam to the United States at the age of eleven years, the most dominant influence will probably be Vietnamese culture. The SCG that you choose to compare with YCG might be from any region of the world. However, you should avoid selecting broad groups, for example, Africans, Asians, or Hispanics. You need to select more specific groups, such as Liberians, Sudanese, Egyptians, Japanese, or Spaniards.
Remember that there are variations within each group; therefore, your task will be to determine the average expression. Perform the task by using the following table. Note that the dimensions are listed in the first column, the information regarding YCG is to be placed in the second column, and the information obtained on the SCG should be placed in the third column. You may use your textbook and lectures or online resources for assistance.

Hofstede (1980) surveyed business people in more than forty different countries and applied a statistical technique, which is called factor analysis, to their responses to determine the outstanding behavioral characteristics. Hofstede found that there were distinct behavioral constructs that could be used to differentiate cultures and labeled the constructs’ cultural dimensions. The dimensions have been used in numerous research studies for both basic and applied research. The dimensions have helped cultural psychologists to define cultural groups and to determine the differences between cultures.
