  1. Watch the Western Tradition series titled The Rise of Rome and The Roman Empire. (These and all videos
    will be shown at the July 6 class).
  2. Watch the Western Tradition series titled Early Christianity and Rise of the Church
  3. Watch Dante The Divine Comedy
  4. Read the relevant parts of the book, especially from Ch. 2 on Judaism (pp. 48-56 on the Hebrews only),
    Chs. 5 and 6 for Greece, Ch. 6 for Rome, and Chs. 8 and 9 for the early Medieval period. Focus on those
    aspects raised by the Western Tradition lectures and Dante’s Divine Comedy.
    Please answer the following questions
  5. Discuss the similarities and contrasts between Stoic philosophy as expressed by the Hellenistic Greeks,
    Roman philosophy, and the philosophies and theology behind the teachings of Judeo-Christianity, including the
    Hebrews and the teachings of Christ, but also St. Paul’s “Epistles to the Church of Rome,” and St. Augustine’s
    City of God against the Pagans. (20 points)
  6. Relying on “The Background to Christianity” on p 178 of the text and Early Christianity, describe the GrecoRoman and the Near Eastern backgrounds of Christianity. (15 points)
  7. Compare Roman law with canon law of the emerging churches (10 points)

    do with the spread of this ideology whose effect was widespread conversion. Basing this answer on the excerpt
    from pp. 278-286 of Dante’s Divine Comedy and the video Dante’s Divine Comedy [update: this video was not
    shown; however, the material from the text as indicated will be sufficient] , please describe the role that belief in
    the Last Judgment played in inducing massive conversion to Christianity, as described in Rise of the Church.

    Ages. The Germanic tribes were loyal to the chiefs, but not beyond that—and so opportunistic plunder was a
    way of life. The knights in shining armor were not exactly shining in their behavior, either. Describe the Early
    Medieval era based on the video The Dark Ages and how it set the tone of the Medieval period as a whole,
