NAYEC newsletter
Explain operations in the context of best practices for children, families, and staff.
Scenario
You are an experienced early childhood educator. You are in a program with preschoolers. Last week, Brett’s
mother approached you at pick-up, saying “Every time I walk into this class to pick up Brett, he’s just playing.
He always seems to be in the block area. When he is not playing with blocks, he is playing with puppets. I have
had it. I am spending good money for Brett to learn here. He can play at home.”
You are frustrated. You understand the vast amount of learning that takes place during play. It is clear to you
that Brett is learning so much by interacting with both puppets and blocks. How can you share this information
in a professional manner with Brett’s mother?
Instructions
You decide to put together a newsletter dealing primarily with the power of play in an early childhood program.
You research the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) website for information on
the importance of play.
The newsletter, two pages in length (i.e. front and back), must cover the following topics for preschool age
children:
Explain the important role of play in the early childhood program for preschoolers.
Identify what type of learning takes place during block play.
Describe what puppets teach young children.
Explain the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) view on play.
Microsoft Word has numerous templates for putting together a newsletter. Add a unique title and visuals and/or
images to your newsletter.
Provide a comprehensive reference page using APA format. List all resources used including the National
Association for the Education of Young children website and at least one (1) additional resource for parents.
No in-text citations required.
