I spent four years working with ten different fellows on laboratory and clinical protocols, as well as a number of individual projects. I made myself indispensible. I would speak at the American Urological Association, The World Congress on Endourology, and present an award winning paper at the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons meeting. I began to understand the deep significance of reporting clinical and laboratory studies. With the broad knowledge base I assimilated, I wrote and received funding for an IRB approved study. In an effort to minimize patient need for future surgical intervention, the paper examined the effects of pomegranate juice extract on reducing early symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy. I know knew I would serve others by becoming an outstanding physician. I attended American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in St Maarten. I completed my clinical rotations at Kern Medical Center, in Bakersfield, CA. During my clinical rotations I enjoyed having the ability to follow up on patients that I meet in clinic. I now have a strong desire to dedicate myself to improving patient care, not only treating and managing disease, but also preventing it. This desire to have a substantial impact both in the office and at the bedside has grown stronger after my clinical experience. During my family practice rotation I was deeply touched by a patient who had many visits in and out of the hospital. After a number of surgeries and chemotherapy, she disclosed to me that she could not read. She began to cry and I comforted her. This patient’s confidence in me was a stark reminder why I chose a career in medicine. Why family practice? Family practice is one of the few specialties where you can interact and function as an individual’s physician from childhood until adulthood. This allows one to not just treat the individual, but also make an impact on their lives and development. I look forward to being proactive in helping them treat disease while also having the opportunity to be hands on. After a significant amount of soul searching and discussions with family practice attending physicians, I decided to dedicate myself to where I will be most happy and contribute the most to serving others. I will accomplish this as a family practitioner.
