IDENTIFY AND ANALYZE THE SOCIAL AND BIOLOGICAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH AMONG ST THE PIMA PEOPLE, AN ABORIGINAL GROUP LIVING IN SOUTHERN ARIZONA.
NTRODUCTION TO THE EXAM: In this take-home exam, you should apply at least two of the course readings to analyze a case study that we have not looked at in class. Everything that you need to know about the case study is listed below in the resource section.
THE EXAM: You are an overworked nursing student who was just awarded a prestigious research grant. In order to collect your (very meager) winnings, you must produce a 1000-1200 word report (not including References) that identifies and analyzes the social and biological determinants of health amongst the Pima people, an aboriginal group living in Southern Arizona. Specifically, you will examine the high incidence of diabetes amongst the Pima. You will present your findings to group of government policy makers, healthcare workers, Pima activists, and other stakeholders.
ORGANIZATION: Your report should have a brief introduction that provides a brief context for the problem; (place your thesis statement at the end of the introduction); (2) Identify the social (and biological) determinants of health, particularly as they relate to the Pima: you can arrange these in any way you choose (social, political, historical etc.); (3) Treat this section as a mini essay. Present your arguments about how specifically you will tackle the problem. It is crucial that you choose the underpinning social and/or biological determinants of health and make an argument to support your thesis; (4) Summarize your findings and provide recommendations based on your focused analysis; (5) References
