Homework Assignment

Case Assignment

This assignment has two parts.

Part 1: Write a descriptive epidemiological analysis of the following diseases: Lyme disease or Malaria. Describe the basic epidemiological patterns of this health condition by person, place, and time.

Part 2: You are a Health Officer for a rural county health department and have been assigned to study the frequency of an infectious disease such as tuberculosis or HIV/AIDS. Write an essay in which you do the following:

1. Describe observational and experimental epidemiology as the two (2) study designs apply to either of the diseases you have chosen. Be sure to identify differences between these two types of analytic epidemiology.

2. Under what conditions will you conduct a case-control study as opposed to a cohort study?

Be sure to support your opinion with evidence from the literature. Please research from the module materials and any credible, scholarly and professional source including the University’s online library in providing your response.

Length: 3-4 pages, excluding title page and references.

Assignment Expectations

Assessment and Grading: Your paper will be assessed based on the performance assessment rubric that is linked within the course. Review it before you begin working on the assignment.

Your work should also follow these Assignment Expectations.

Discuss the pattern and distribution of the disease in the population of your state as well as subgroups within the state.

Descriptive epidemiology is used to evaluate trends in health and disease and to be able to make comparisons among the population and subgroups within countries; and to provide a basis for planning, provision, and evaluation of services.

As a health officer, you have been asked to collect information to characterize and summarize tuberculosis epidemic in your state.

Write a paper in which you do the following:

  1. Discuss the pattern and distribution of the disease in the population of your state as well as subgroups within the state.
  2. What recommendations would you make to your administrator based on your findings?
  3. Describe the basic types of epidemiologic study designs that are used to test hypotheses, identify associations and establish causation.

Be sure you support essay with evidence from the literature.

Length: 2–3 pages, excluding title page and references.

SLP Assignment Expectations

Assessment and Grading: Your paper will be assessed based on the performance assessment rubric that is linked within the course. Review it before you begin working on the assignment.

Your work should also follow these Assignment Expectations.

Discuss descriptive epidemiology aspect of disease surveillance.

Your comments will be graded on how well they meet the Discussion Requirements posted under “Before You Begin.”

Make sure to review the E-learning course – Introduction to public health surveillance presentation.

  1. The Introduction to public health surveillance presentation identified 7 uses of public health surveillance. Identify two uses that relate to epidemiology of diseases.
  2. Discuss descriptive epidemiology aspect of disease surveillance.
  3. Discuss the three main observational study designs, if you are to conduct an observational study of a population grouped into smokers and non-smokers. Which of the three main study designs would you use and why? Please provide in-text citation(s) to support your point of view.

Explain the necessity for developing self as an effective follower.

You have been working on a busy orthopedic unit for 6 months. The average patient length of stay in the unit is 4 to 7 days. The program from which you have graduated has subsequently graduated a new class, and three of the new graduates are coming to work on your unit. The nurse manager has told you that she is counting on you to “demonstrate leadership and assist these new nurses to adapt to the work environment.”

Based on the behaviors of an effective leader found in this chapter, how will you assist your new colleagues?

1. What are the differences between leadership and followership?

2. Explain the necessity for developing self as an effective follower.

3. Describe a situation in which a person acted as a leader. Explain how you concluded that the person was a leader.

4. Review the different leadership theories discussed in this chapter. Which ones appeal to you as a guide for your future leadership development, and why? Which ones might be more difficult to apply in your life, and why?

5. Have the students identify three goals for the next year that will assist you in becoming a more effective follower.

6. Review with the class the qualities of effective leaders discussed in this chapter. 7. Develop a 1- to 2-year leadership plan applying the qualities of effective leaders.

8. Identify these qualities in leaders that you known. What specific situations have you observed where these leaders have been effective and why? a) -Identify specific situations.

9- You have been working on a busy orthopedic unit for 6 months. The average patient length of stay in the unit is 4–7 days. The program from which you have graduated has subsequently graduated a new class, and three of the new graduates are coming to work on your unit.
