THE FUTURE OF NURSING PRACTICE

THE FUTURE OF NURSING PRACTICE

Role of a nurse in the Emerging Health-care Environment

Introduction

The current times are highly exciting in the healthcare industry. Healthcare today is marked by a high number of changes in delivery of care, increased use and advancement in technology, high patient expectations, and changes in the workplace resulting in growing and evolving role of nurses (Luz, Shadmi & Drach-Zahavy, 2019). Due to the changes occurring in the healthcare industry and elsewhere in the community, nurses of the future need to prepare for a shift in role as new challenges and opportunities changes nursing.
Statement of Issue

Changes in the healthcare sector and in the society have had significant impacts on role of nurses today. While critical thinking, clinical skills, compassion and people skills have always been critical in nursing, today they need to be practiced in a complex environment with new challenges and opportunities. Nurses have always been at the front line of trends in healthcare, often requiring to have improvements in education in order to lead the changes. As such, these changes will affect the way nurses carry out their work in the future.
Evidence supporting the issue

There are several areas where nurses have been affected by the changing healthcare environment which will continue to significantly affect nursing. These include:

Health quality initiatives and promotion of patient outcomes: As the most direct patient caregivers, nurses play a critical role in the process of improving care quality and patient outcomes (Amiri et al., 2019). Throughout the US safety records and satisfaction rates are available easily due to efforts of nurses
Promotion of use of technology in healthcare: Nurses have had to stay sharp and keep up with technology. Nurses are the first healthcare receptors of such innovations as electronic health records and remote monitoring tools used by patients (Dorsey et al., 2020).
Changes in healthcare delivery systems: Changes in areas of nurse practice such as the introduction of ambulatory surgery centers where patients can get services out of hospitals have increased job opportunities for nurses. Research shows that newly licensed nurses have embraced jobs in nursing homes, home health and ambulatory settings (Parker, 2019).
Changes in patient: Demographic shifts, improved consumer education and increased access to healthcare services are changing interactions between nurses and patients (Dorsey et al., 2020). Other factors such as increase in older people also affect nurses.
Increased need for education: Most nurses today has opted to go back to school to respond to changes and new challenges in healthcare.
Prediction

Nurses of the Future will take up healthcare leadership and redesign care in the society. With nurses being involved in all aspects of the increasingly complex healthcare system, they are the glue that will hold together healthcare in the future. Moreover, large number of nurses today are going for higher education to achieve bachelors and doctorate degrees hence position themselves for huge responsibilities.
Future Nurses will be involved in community health practices with emphasis on disease prevention. Legislations such as the Affordable Care Act (ACA), promote healthcare education to reduce rates of hospital admissions.
Nurses of the future will require to be highly accountable and responsible in providing care. There has been an increase in healthcare consumer education owing to technology and the internet where information is readily available (Dorsey et al., 2020). Mistakes in the healthcare may therefore results legal claims and reimbursement which means extra care has to be observed by nurses to prevent such challenges
Nurses will work in collaborative teams with other healthcare professionals. Increased teamwork and multi-professional teams are expected in future.
Conclusion

Change is inevitable and nurses have to be ready for massive shifts in the healthcare industry that will affect them. If properly positioned, nurses will be at the forefront of the healthcare system, leading and guiding other healthcare professionals.

Genogram and Sociogram

A genogram is similar to a family tree that is used to identify various familial patterns going back at least three generations, whereas a sociogram is a self-portrait of relationships that can reflect any point in a person’s life. These tools can be used with clients.

Create a genogram in which you focus on education, career, employment, and community service or volunteer activities for each of the members of your family, including future aspirations when applicable. Use the appropriate symbols to represent gender, whether someone is deceased, and family relationships. You should take this opportunity to interview members of your family, particularly those you have not spoken with recently, to get more information about their work life and goals. You may wish to visit the genogram website to build your own genogram or simply draw it out on paper.

Create a sociogram in which you are at the very center of the target. Place an X in the middle of that central circle and label it “ME.” Choose a time frame that is either prior to beginning your master’s program, during your masters program, or after your masters program and you are in a professional position. At the top of your sociogram, indicate which time frame you have chosen. Place people on the target based on how close you feel to them. Some may be at the edge of the page, and some may be inside your intimate circle. This is not based on the definition of your relationship with them, but rather it is based on your emotional connection to that person during the time frame you chose. Then, draw arrows from you to the person to indicate your experience of the relationship, and from the person to you indicating your perception of their relationship to you. Both the near/far relationship and the attraction to/from is important information for you to understand yourself better within your own context. You may wish to use the provided template to build your own sociogram, or print the template, fill in the sections, and scan it.

APA style is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

Refer to “Genogram and Sociogram Scoring Guide,” prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Course Scenario

You have been hired as the Human Resources Director for a global organization that is headquartered in the United States. Your job is to evaluate and make recommendations in the area of diversity for your company. Each section will contain specific areas within diversity for you to focus on. You will be tasked with choosing from one of the diversity areas that are provided to you. Be sure to conduct research using the university library and other relevant sources.

Diversity Areas (Select one, and continue to use for all modules)

· Race

· Gender

· Sexual orientation

· Religion

· Ethnicity

Instructions

In your first days of your new role, you have noticed a lack of diversity initiatives. Your CEO has come to you and asked for a brief executive summary outlining the importance of your selected diversity group in the workplace.

For your report you have been asked to reflect and address the following sets of questions:

· Introduce the diversity area you have selected through an executive summary.

· What are two benefits of having your selected diversity group represented in the workplace?

· How does the diversity group contribute to a collaborative and innovative environment?

· Conclude your report; why it is important to address this diverse group in the workplace?

Nursing Research

a.

This topic is best suited for ethnographic inquiry because it focuses on a specific culture and community. Through an ethnography, the researcher will be able to gain a deeper understanding of Hattian refugees as they experience the passage through observation, examination, interviewing, and other forms of data collection associated with this research design (Driessnack et al., 2007).

b.

This topic is best suited for grounded theory research as it focuses on the social processes underlying human experiences (Driessnack et al., 2007). A grounded theory study would allow researchers to develop a conceptualization of what it means to live with AIDS that is grounded in actual observations of AIDS patients (Polit & Beck, 2017).

c.

This topic would be best suited for phenomenological research because it centers on a phenomenon that is being lived and experienced by individuals (Driessnack et al., 2007). Phenomenological research seeks to understand an experience within the context of real-life and to explore various concepts, themes, and theories related to a particular phenomenon, in this case having a child with leukemia (Polit & Beck, 2017).

d.

This topic is best suited for ethnographic research because rituals are an aspect of culture, and ethnography focuses on cultural examination. The topic would also require the researcher to be present in the nursing homes, and they can achieve this through immersion and fieldwork which are important parts of ethnography. Through an ethnography, the researchers can gain meaningful information that they would not be able to gain through simple interviews (Driessnack et al., 2007).

e.

This topic would be best suited for grounded theory research because it seeks to understand the experiences of nurses when making decisions regarding do-not-resuscitate orders. A grounded theory study would enable researchers to analyze a full range of possible decision-making processes and gain a full understanding that can be used to guide future research and knowledge (Driessnack et al., 2007).
