Assignment #1: Chapter 7, Exercise 1–

Find the website of a company that makes a product used by professionals in your field. (Personal computers are a safe choice.) Locate three discussions on the site that use different organizational patterns. For example, there will probably be a passage devoted to ordering a product from the site (using a chronological pattern), a description of a product (using a partition pattern), and a passage describing why the company’s products are superior to those of its competitors (using a comparison-and-contrast argument). Print a copy of the passages you’ve identified.

You are researching portable GPS systems for use in your company’s existing fleet of 35 delivery vans. You are considering such factors as ease of use, size of screen, number of points of interest, and Bluetooth compatibility. You conclude that the three leading models are quite similar in all but one way: price. One model costs about 30 percent less than the other two models. Ann, a community nurse, made an afternoon home visit with Susan and her father. After the death of her mother, Susan had growing concerns about her father living alone. “I worry about my father all the time. He is becoming more forgetful and he has trouble seeing. Mom used to take care of him. I am not sleeping and I am irritable around him. Yesterday I shouted at him because he wouldn’t let me help him with his laundry. I felt terrible! I am at my wits’ end! My brothers and sisters do not want to put dad in a nursing home but they are not willing to help out. As usual, they have left me with all the responsibility. I work part time and have two small children to care for.” Susan’s father, Sam, sat quietly with tears filling his eyes. He was well nourished and well-groomed but would not make eye contact. Nurse Ann noticed that the house was clean and orderly. A tray in front of the TV had the remains of a ham sandwich and glass of ice tea. Mail was piled up, unopened on a small table near the front door. There was only one car in the driveway and the yard was in need of attention.

An Ideal Justice System

Submit a 750- to 800 word consultation report for a nation that is creating a new judicial system as part of its newly drafted constitution.
The characteristics of the newly formed nation include:
Indigenous peoples make up 15% of the population; recent immigrants make up another 20%; descendants of a group that historically had been treated as a subclass but has been attempting to gain a foothold in society for many generations make up 35%; and a group descended from centuries-old settlers to the land make up the final 30%. This final group always has held the largest share of wealth and power, although other groups have marginal representation in these areas. This final group has for many generations held a significant majority of governmental roles.
The topics to be addressed in your consultation report are:
Define due process in the newly created judicial system and how it will be articulated in a clear way to citizens.
Identify important roles in the newly created judicial system.
How do the roles in the newly created judicial system affect the balance of power?
How does the balance of power affect each role?
How do you propose balancing the protection of rights with the protection of society?
How can the new judicial system be developed with cultural awareness as a key feature?
