Post a description of the steps you would take to address the situation in an ethical manner. Justify your response with evidence from the Readings.

Discussion Board 1

Post a description of strengths and challenges associated with title protection and licensure. Describe two strengths and two challenges.

Discussion Board 2

Although students of social work have not yet satisfied the criteria to earn the title of “social worker,” they are bound by the same ethical requirements as titled social workers. Social workers regularly face ethical issues of varying magnitude, and social work students may as well. Some issues seem obvious, while others may emerge in subtle ways.

For this Discussion, select one of the following scenarios. Consider the dilemma described, and imagine how you might feel if you found yourself in a similar situation. Think about the ethical obligations you would have as a social worker or social work student.

Scenario 1

You are a social worker in a public health department providing services to pregnant women. As part of your duties, you provide parenting education, support, and connection to community resources, and you follow up with the families and their newborns for six months after birth. Ms. C has been a client of yours during two pregnancies in the last three years. She has a 15 year-old, a nine year-old, a three year-old, and a newborn. On this day, you are making a routine visit to Ms. C, who lives in an older mobile home in a rural area of the county. You take with you a newly hired social worker who is in training. When you arrive at the house, you find that it is clean and the two older girls are busy doing their homework. The three year-old is playing, and Ms. C is feeding the baby.

During the visit, the new social worker asks Ms. C whether she is looking for work. When you discreetly ask her about birth control, the social worker remarks, motioning to the 15 year-old daughter, “You better get her on birth control if you do not want more babies around here.” Ms. C does not respond to the other social worker, instead maintaining her focus on you. You can tell that she is bothered by the remark about her daughter.

Scenario 2

You are at lunch with some of your social work colleagues at a mental health center. While you are eating lunch, one of your colleagues says, “So, none of you can beat my morning. I had a borderline in my office who was definitely off her meds. She kept jumping out of the chair and spinning around the room and she was talking really fast about having a baby and being pregnant. I did not even try to deal with her. I called the Access Team and it took them half an hour to get to my office. The whole time I am watching her spin around, and I cannot help but laugh. They took her for an evaluation, but that was the craziest woman.”

By Day 4

Post a description of the steps you would take to address the situation in an ethical manner. Justify your response with evidence from the Readings.

By Day 6

Respond to at least two colleagues who selected the other scenario. Compare the approaches you each took in addressing ethical concerns associated with the scenario.

What is the clinical area of concern (depression, anxiety, PTSD, eating disorders, self-esteem, et cetera) that your program is designed to address?

Identifying a Population and Clinical Area of Concern

For your three-part project for this course, you will design a program evaluation plan that will examine the impact of a clinical intervention (such as reality therapy, cognitive therapy, or narrative therapy) on a clinical area of concern (such as depression) within a selected population (such as children, adolescents, adults, older adults). Note: You will not be implementing the program evaluation; you will only plan a hypothetical program evaluation in this course.

For this discussion, identify the population and the clinical area of concern that are addressed in the mental health counseling program for which you will propose the program evaluation. The identified population can be general or specific. You may want to identify a specific, underserved group. Examples of populations include the general public, children and adolescents, adults, women, men, veterans, police officers, Hispanic males, Hispanic females, high school students, college students, et cetera.

Once you have identified your population, identify the clinical area of concern that your project will examine. You might select a certain clinical area of concern that is a focus at your practicum or internship site. Examples of clinical areas of concern include, but are not limited to, substance abuse or dependency, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, attention deficit/hyperactivity symptoms or disorders, or PTSD.

Note: You may change the population, clinical area of concern, and the clinical intervention that you address in discussions throughout this course; doing so, however, will require more work on your part, as you will need to go back and research new literature.

In this post, address the following:

  • What population does your hypothetical program serve? Specify age range, gender, ethnicity, race, and so forth to demonstrate the unique characteristics of the population served.
  • What is the clinical area of concern (depression, anxiety, PTSD, eating disorders, self-esteem, et cetera) that your program is designed to address?
  • Integrate, cite, and reference at least one peer-reviewed journal article that describes how your hypothetical population has unique needs in this area of clinical concern. For example, your hypothetical program could be designed to assist female law enforcement officers who have developed PTSD. In this case, you would find at least one article that describes the particular issues that female officers might face in developing or getting treatment for PTSD.

Describe, at a high-level, your intended approach in response to your chosen public health intervention, if awarded this grant.

MAPP Model Needs Assessment and Identification of an FOA Presentation In this assignment, you will complete a public health needs assessment MAPP matrix template. Next, you will utilize the FOA that addresses the public health intervention that addresses your chosen topic. You will then create a PowerPoint presentation that demonstrates your chosen public health intervention and provides information about your MAPP matrix and the pertinent FOA.

Part I: Conduct an MAPP Matrix Needs Assessment

Conduct a public health needs assessment using the MAPP model. It will result in a MAPP matrix, which identifies a public health need in which you are personally interested.

All MAPP information can be obtained from the National Association of City and County Health Officials (NACCHO) Web site at the following:

  • National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO). (2012). Mobilizing for action through planning and partnerships (MAPP). Retrieved from http://www.naccho.org/topics/infrastructure/mapp/index.cfm

Four assessments of the MAPP model and the issues they address are described below:

  • Community Themes and Strengths Assessments: This assessment results in a deeper understanding of the issues that residents feel are important by answering the questions:

a. What is important to our community?

b. How is quality of life perceived in our community?

c. What assets do we have that can be used to improve community health?

  • Local Public Health System Assessment (LPHSA): This assessment focuses on all the organizations and entities that contribute to the public’s health. The LPHSA answers the questions:
    1. What are the components, activities, competencies, and capacities of our local public health system?
    2. How are the essential services being provided to our community?
  • Community Health Status Assessment: This assessment identifies priority community health and quality-of-life issues. Questions answered include:

a. How healthy are our residents?

b. What does the health status of our community look like?

  • Forces of Change Assessment: This assessment focuses on identifying forces such as legislation, technology, and other impending changes that affect the context in which the community and its public health system operate. This answers the questions:

a. What is occurring or might occur that affects the health of our community or the local public health system?

b. What specific threats or opportunities are generated by these occurrences?

Part II: Identify Funding Opportunity

After you have completed your public health needs assessment matrix template, you will create a presentation that addresses the following:

  • Identify your chosen public health intervention that relates to your MPH coursework.
  • Explain how (using the MAPP Model) you completed the matrix template to identify your chosen public health intervention.
  • Explain why the intervention is an important initiative.
  • Identify whom the intervention will assist (target audience).
  • Explain the general requirements of the FOA.
  • Describe, at a high-level, your intended approach in response to your chosen public health intervention, if awarded this grant.

Develop an 8–10-slide presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint format. Be sure to use speaker notes at the bottom of each slide to provide detailed information. If you know how to insert an audio file, feel free to use that approach as well. Your goal is to fully inform your audience about your chosen public health intervention and chosen FOA. Utilize at least 3–5 scholarly sources in your research and be sure to include a references page. Cite all sources on a separate page using APA standards. Write in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_W3_A2.ppt.

Submission Details:

  • By the due date assigned, deliver your assignment to the Submissions Area.
  • On a separate page, cite all sources using the APA format

Describe the specific population(s) (ethnic or racial group,  homosexuals, veterans, women, children, adolescents, etc.) affected by  the health issue you selected. Explain how this population is  discriminately affected by the health issue you selected.

Minority groups in the United States carry a  significant and disproportionate burden of specific diseases. For  example, while African Americans make up only 12% of the U.S.  population, this group accounted for 44% of all HIV/AIDS cases in the  United States in 2010 (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2013). In 2010,  Hispanics were 1.2 times (Office of Minority Health, 2012) more likely  to be obese and almost 2 times (Office of Minority Health, 2013) more  likely to be diagnosed with diabetes than their non-Hispanic white  counterparts.

There has been much discussion  about the type of effective interventions for promoting well-being and  improving health outcomes in all Americans, especially for minority  groups. Medical social workers excel at providing direct services to  individual patients. Given current efforts to shift the paradigm to  population-centered interventions, social workers must modify their  skills, broaden their perspective, and consider evidence-based  interventions.

To prepare for this Assignment, select a public health issue of interest to you HIV/AIDS,

In a 5- report:

  • Describe the specific population(s) (ethnic or racial group,  homosexuals, veterans, women, children, adolescents, etc.) affected by  the health issue you selected. Explain how this population is  discriminately affected by the health issue you selected.
  • Explain the primary determinants of the health issue. Then, explain  how these determinants contribute to the disparities in care for the  population.
  • Explain what specific social work interventions you might implement  to address this health issue, reduce or eliminate disparities, and  improve health outcomes.
  • Identify some challenges you may encounter when implementing the  interventions. Then, explain the strategies you might employ to address  these challenges.
  • Explain the advocacy roles a medical social worker might play in  addressing the disparities in health care for the health issues and  population you selected.
  • Cite your response using external scholarly resources.
