What have we lost or gained in our ability to fully express ourselves in our friendships in our contemporary, Western society?

We learned that, in Medieval Europe, friendship enjoyed a status not  unlike marriage. Vernon writes: “So great was the political weight that  such friendships could bear that they could effect changes in much the  same way as a marriage” (p. 179). Marriages between friends, kissing,  sleeping together, and even being buried together were not uncommon. In  places like Africa and Asia, this experience is also not uncommon. Yet,  in the West, these actions are confined to interactions within  marriages.

In this week’s reading material, the following  philosophers discuss their views on this topic: Aristotle, Epicurus,  Plato, Cicero, Seneca, Plutarch and Locke. Make sure to incorporate  their views as you answer each discussion question. Think about how  their views may be similar or different from your own. In at least 350  words total, please answer each of the following, drawing upon your  reading materials and your personal insight.

Vernon, M. (2010). The Meaning of Friendship. New York, NY: Palgrave Macmillan. Chapter 6: Politics of Friendship.

  • What have we lost or gained in our ability to fully express ourselves in our friendships in our contemporary, Western society?
  • To what extent is the enactment and expression of friendship  similar/ different in contemporary society compared with Medieval Europe  and Ancient Greece?  Discuss the personal and societally-imposed  constraints that limit our sharing close friendship bonds with others  today.

How have you personally been challenged to draw from a diverse pool  of individuals in your experience of “close” friendships? What are some  of the barriers, if any?

In the classical, Greek period, friendship consisted of close bonds  between men of essentially the same race and social standing. It was  unheard of for men and women to enjoy friendships or for a master and  slave to interact socially.  This changed a bit in Roman times, and  today, many of us enjoy a lot more diversity in our friendships. Still,  as Vernon shares, similar to the politics of friendship in Ancient  Greece, we mirror a bit of that homogeneity in our friendships today:

“We see as much to this day, inasmuch as friendships across social classes and ethnic divides are relatively rare” (p. 171).

Write a 4-5 page double spaced paper that presents two major findings about your chosen topic with an explanation of their significance using 5 reliable and reputable sources

In this assignment, you will use web-based data and reports to document an example of surveys on American values. The paper must include a minimum of 5 references in APA format at the end of the paper (Note that any references in the references list should be cited in the body of the paper).

Before writing your paper, access the web-site below:

Findings presented by The Public Religion Research Institute represent a random sample of Americans who were respondents in the PRRI American Values Survey.

Choose one of the major topics, click on “Read the Analyses,” and report findings presented in the PRRI website. Choose at least two of the major findings reported in the Analyses for that topic to discuss.

(1) Write a 4-5 page double spaced paper that presents two major findings about your chosen topic with an explanation of their significance using 5 reliable and reputable sources (You may use some news outlets that present information in an unbiased way such as NPR or a research organization that does independent analysis, but avoid media outlets with an obvious partisan slant such as Fox News on the one hand, or MSNBC on the other; several of your sources should be from the class or from peer reviewed articles outside of class that you have identified using a library search).  The details are up to you, but you should demonstrate a good understanding of how to situate the findings in relation to broader themes from literature in the course, or to do the additional research necessary while relying on reputable sources..

(2) Organize your paper using the general format of I Introduction II Body/Narrative III Summary/Conclusion.

(3) In the Summary/Conclusion of your paper include a paragraph on the lessons you learned from class and external material, in particular, by addressing how your analysis explains at least in some way the relationship between American values and the respondents’ attitudes about social issues.

(4) Use APA in-text citation formatting when referencing assigned material and include a list of sources in APA citation formatting at the end of the paper.

(5) Edit and submit to spell-check.
