The “soul friendships” can be difficult to cultivate.

The “soul friendships” can be difficult to cultivate.  As it states  in the chapter, they can take time to develop, but usually there is some  sort of commonality between the two people in which the friendship can  develop into one of the soul.  The example in the chapter in which Mark  Vernon uses for this is between Montaigne and La Boetie.  Montaigne is  said to state that individuals that are capable of soul friendship are  rare and thus the soul friendship even rarer.  He goes on to say that  they are a force of destiny.  However, Mark Vernon points out that the  friendship in which Montaigne and La Boetie formed was based off of  timing and the period in which the lived.  Both had similar, and  dangerous points of view for the time, so when the met their friendship  already had a foundation to built upon.  This is an important aspect for  the development of a friendship of the soul because without some form  of commonality in where mutual respect is given the friendship cannot  develop into something deeper.  The author also uses Emerson and Fuller  as an example, even all Emerson uses the “phrase divine friendship.”   When they firs met Emerson did not initially take a liking to her,  however he soon had a great respect for her because of her mind.  This  then laid a common ground and mutual respect was able to form and then  deepen into a friendship of the soul.  I think it is important for  friends of the soul to have a foundation of mutual respect, and by  having this they are less inclined to be upset or the friendship failing  when the other person is completely honest with them.  In fact, that  should be something that is welcomed, because they respect each other to  such a degree that it goes beyond petty indifferences.  I can say that I  have one such friend, I may not call our friendship a “soul friendship”  but it is close.  I respect him and he respects me and we have always  been able to be honest with each other.  It is a friendship where,  although there is still and element of self-loving, we can see past our  differences and in a way that makes the friendship more meaningful.  The  reason I say this is that I can count on him to real me back in when I  am being a little stubborn, or when I cannot see the truth of a matter  because I am blinded by some emotion.  The key to is to be honest and  respectful and to understand that difference of opinions is what makes  the friendship more than just someone I can be around and be polite to.

Describe the relationship between individual artistic expression and the cultural, social, political, and historical forces which give rise to these expressions.

As a way of experiencing the Humanities beyond your classroom, computer, and textbook, you are asked to attend a “cultural event” and report on your experience. This assignment requires the following:

  • Write a three to four (3-4) page paper (750-1,000 words) in which you:
  1. Identify the date visited, location, name, and background of the museum or specific exhibition. (If virtual, identify the Website along with the other information.)
  2. Describe four(4) works, noting the artist, title, subject, and the time period of each work.
  3. Compare the style, influences, and meaning or intent of each piece, highlighting any changes (if any) from the first to last piece.
  4. Explain your reasons for selecting the pieces in a discussion of the reasons for the artist’s popularity and/or impact on the art world.
  5. Summarize the main points of four (4) works discussed in your paper in a PowerPoint presentation of at least four(4) slides. Each of the slides should have three to four (3-4) short bullet points and notes about the works in the slide notes section. Include a cover page for the PowerPoint. Add the slides with notes to your paper.
  6. Include six (6) references that help supports your claims. (The text may be used as one (1) reference.)

Visiting a Museum

  • It makes sense to approach a museum the way a seasoned traveler approaches visiting a city for the first time. Find out what is available to see. In the museum, find out what sort of exhibitions are currently housed in the museum and start with the exhibits that interest you. If there is a traveling exhibition, it’s always a good idea to see it while you have the chance. Then, if you have time, you can look at other things in the museum.
  • Make notes as you go through the museum and accept any handouts or pamphlets that the museum provides free. While you should not quote anything from the printed material when you do your report, the handouts may help to refresh your memory later.
  • The quality of your experience is not measured by the amount of time you spend in the galleries or the number of works of art that you actually see. The most rewarding experiences can come from finding three (3) pieces of art or exhibits that intrigue you and then considering those works in leisurely contemplation. Most museums even have benches where you can sit and study a particular piece.
  • If you are having a difficult time deciding which pieces to write about, ask yourself these questions: (1) If the museum you are visiting suddenly caught fire, which three (3) pieces of art or exhibits would you most want to see saved from the fire? (2) Why would you choose those two (2) particular pieces?

Note: If a student is unable to attend a cultural event in person due to circumstances beyond the student’s control, then the instructor will recommend an alternate event/activity for the student to “attend” online. The “ virtual” event/activity is usually only for students who, due to their physical location, cannot possibly attend an event/activity in person; typically, these students are stationed overseas or have no means of transportation. If you believe that you have a legitimate reason for attending a “virtual” activity, you must contact the instructor no later than Week 5 for your request to be considered.

Identify at least one area of growth in either of these roles you would like to further develop, and explain why.  Identify two significant external factors that  might influence your work if you served in a leadership or management  role in social work.

Leadership and Management—A Personal Perspective

Last week, you began exploring the similarities  and differences of leadership and management roles and the contributions  these roles make to an organization’s functioning. Social workers need  to be aware of these similarities and differences in order to determine  which management or leadership skills are most appropriate in a given  position or situation.

This week, you have  focused on the influence of external factors on an organization’s  functioning with a special focus on their impact on the leadership of  social workers in supervisory roles.

As you  have explored leadership and management roles, skills, and behaviors,  you may have become aware of how these align, or do not align, with your  personal skills, strengths, and interests. You may also have begun to  consider how external factors might influence you if you were to assume a  leadership or management role in social work.

For  this Assignment, you assess your strengths and areas for growth in  order to determine what aspects of leadership and management are a good  “fit” with your personality, leadership style, and relevant skills. You  also address how external factors might influence you as you serve in a  leadership or management role.

Assignment (5 paragraphs): Complete the following:

  1. Assess your strengths and areas for growth with regard to both the  leadership and management roles based on what you understand about these  roles so far. Be sure to address whether your skills and interests  align better with the leadership or management role.
  2. Identify at least one area of growth in either of these roles you would like to further develop, and explain why.
  3. Identify two significant external factors that  might influence your work if you served in a leadership or management  role in social work.
  4. Explain why these external factors are significant  and how they might affect your work as a leader or manager.
