TARGET AUDIENCE: YOUNG ADULTS
Scholars have noted that “marketing, in general, means publicizing your name, program, and service to your target audience. Ethnic marketing employs the personal marketing strategies that best reflect the cultural values, beliefs, and norms of the ethnic audience you are targeting” (Guion, Kent, & Deihl, 2009). According to these authors, there are five keys to successful ethnic marketing:
1. Value the cultural uniqueness of your target group;
2. Value cooperation and bridge-building with community leaders and other organizations working within the community;
3. Value the cultural beliefs, symbols, and practices of your target group;
4. Value differences in languages, accents, practices, and social conduct;
5. Value word-of-mouth and interpersonal communication to spread your message.

Discuss how the BSN-prepared nurse can assist a nurse leader in the budgeting process by contributing data readily available to the staff nurse.

In Huston’s (2010) brief, but impressive article (required reading this week), the author outlines several leadership competencies that EVERY nurse leader will need for 2020. That year is not too far in the future, is it?
Select one of the eight leadership competencies Huston described and relate it to your own leadership of nurses and nursing. This should promote a robust discussion as we come from different clinical and nonclinical perspectives.

Reading the Statistical Section of a Research Article
• How do you determine if a hypothesis is true or false? Researchers select a statistical test based on factors such as the number of variables to be analyzed, the level of measurement of the variables, the sampling procedure and the type of question being researched, e.g. relationship or differences.
• How do you interpret the result of the statistical test in a research article? The result will be reported as a number, e.g. t=4.88, F=3.98, r=.78. (t is a t test, F is an ANOVA and r is a correlation.)
• How do you know if the number reported proves the hypothesis? The numbers reported may be significant or not. In nursing a p value of .05 is often selected to determine significance, e.g. p=.01. A p value of <.05 means that the results are probably not caused by chance, and therefore we are fairly certain that the predicted relationship between the variables actually exists.
How can the researcher be sure that the results are correct? (e.g. that a difference or relationship actually exists between variables)
