Assignment two: Sociological application

Assignment two: Sociological application
Due: 11:55pm ET Sunday Week 4
Overview
One of the most important things we can do in this course is distinguish between the sociological viewpoint toward health and illness and strictly clinical or medical viewpoints toward health and illness. For example, it is crucial that we understand how sociology incorporates issues of race, class, gender, language, and so forth into the analysis of health and illness outcomes in society. The purpose of this assignment is for us to examine the definition of the sociological viewpoint toward health and illness, and utilize major concepts from our reading material to support this response.
Instructions
Construct a 4-6 page paper that fully explores each of these three areas:
Identify and describe a current and major health issue that is a leading cause of mortality in the U.S. or overseas.
Explain the medical viewpoint of this health issue.
Explain the sociological viewpoint of this health issue.
Use two peer-reviewed sources (none that are provided in class) to support your explanation of how the sociological viewpoint applies to this health issue.
Compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses that each approach in resolving this health issue, or reducing mortality.
The paper should be typed, double-spaced, 1” margins, arial or times new roman 11 pt font, and saved as .doc. The paper should be in APA format (cover page, running header, major heading, subheadings, in-text citations, and reference list),

xplain three major ways in which medicalization has been able to flourish in modern society

Assignment 3: Medicalization
Due on by 11:55pm ET the Sunday of Week 5
Overview
A major component of the sociological discussion of health and illness concerns an analysis of how problems that were previously not considered medical in nature are now a part of the province of medicine. This process, known as medicalization, describes how remedial efforts in the nonmedical realm to solve certain social problems are now given over to modern medicine as a topic of discussion and treatment. The purpose of this assignment is to define medicalization and offer an important commentary about the spread of this social trend in society today.
Instructions
Construct a 4-6 page paper that fully satisfies these four areas:
Define medicalization in sociological terms.
Explain three major ways in which medicalization has been able to flourish in modern society.
Describe one mental or physical illness that has become medicalized, apply sociological concepts to analyze how this illness has become medicalized.
Finally, offer a commentary about whether or not you think the medicalization of this problem is warranted. In other words, do you think that medicalization, in the example you’ve chosen, is unnecessary? Why or why not?
The paper should be typed, double-spaced, 1” margins, arial or times new roman 11 pt font, and saved as .doc. The paper should be in APA format (cover page, running header, major heading, subheadings, in-text citations, and reference list),

How is soil shaped by climate, parent material and biology?

Please post a 2-3 paragraph response to the video on the Discussion Board. This includes what you thought, felt, liked, weak points, strong points, and so on, and WHY. Best comments come from thinking about and commenting on how the movie fits into the context of the course materials and labs. Remember: the review is your analysis of the movie. The commentary should include at least three distinct points you are making about the movie.
The following film questions should guide you:
Why is soil considered the living layer? Why is it the interface between geology and biology?
How is soil shaped by climate, parent material and biology?
What is the long term weathering products of soils as described at Hawaii?
By what mechanisms can new soil material move into an area? What percentage is soil transported to a place and what percentage is created in place from the bedrock?
Why should soil be viewed as a living thing? What are exudates that plants put out and what are they used for?
Where did nitrogen fertilizers come from? What demands did it place on agricultural fields?
How was plowing a problem on hillside soils? What civilization was ruined by over plowing? How much of the worlds arable soils have been lost?
What element are organisms in the soil looking the most for?
What is special about compost? What is it?
What is salinization of soils?
Why is organic farming healthier for soils and the environment?
