Field of Study: Human Resource Management

Instructions: As our world become increasingly complex, the need for critical thinkers and researchers increase.  People want to understand certain changes in their world and phenomena as it occurs.  The academic community requires that some type of theory be linked to any type of understanding used to explain certain occurrences.  Gray (2004) noted that “a theory consists of a set of interrelated concepts, definitions, and propositions that demonstrate relationships between variables” (p. 11).  As a graduate student, you have been required to conduct research in terms of synthesis of research studies, analysis of the findings, and evaluation any possible linkages, generalizations, and/or provide possible recommendations or suggestions for the area(s) being studied.

To demonstrate your ability to conduct research, exhibit your research skills and abilities in the form of a mini-research project.  In other words create a mini research proposal to address a current issue or social problem in your field of study that may require additional research.  Identify a problem or issue then write up a research problem statement to guide you on this research endeavor.  With this research problem statement, you are to develop a mini-research project to demonstrate your ability to critically think through a problem situation in today’s workplace/marketplace.

The format of the mini-research project proposal is as follows:

•    Title

•    Problem Statement

•    Theoretical framework

•    Research questions or propositions

•    Methodology and/or research design with limitations

•    Results and findings (what do you anticipate to discover)

•    Conclusions and recommendations (what assumptions are you making as you propose this study?)

•    How do you propose that this research contributes to new knowledge in your field?

Since this research project will not actually be conducted, you may approach this mini-research project from the perspective of a research study proposal.  However, you should consider any possible or anticipated results and findings, as well as conclusions and recommendations.  Finally, clearly state how you believe—based upon the literature—that the research would contribute to new knowledge in one’s field of study.

Using PowerPoint create a presentation to “sell” your logo. It will be 3-5 slides long. The first slide describes the features of the new logo. Include the logo itself, along with text describing the color selection, font choice, image choice (if used), etc.

Background Information

IBM is one of the most staid, corporate images and brands in America. Three simple capital letters in a block font, conjures images of traditional corporate America. Please view the following PowerPoint presentation on the history behind the logo.

  • IBM Logo History

Over the last few years, IBM has embarked on a series of virtual brainstorming sessions with its employees. Using their “Jam” technology, these online discussions resulted in the re-development of the company value statement. Reflecting the needs of business, marketplace, and employee, the values are:

  • “Dedication to every client’s success”
  • “Innovation that matters – for our company and for the world”
  • “Trust and personal responsibility in all relationships”

Search the IBM website (http://www.ibm.com) for more information on the values and mission of the organization.

Assignment

Your assignment is to re-create the brand image for IBM by redoing the visual identity concept (logo) for old-school IBM.

This assignment has four parts:

  1. You will need to completely re-design the IBM logo. This is your chance to be creative. Use Word, PowerPoint, or any other application with which you are familiar (it should support text and/or images) to design the new logo. The logo should represent the values of the organization.
  2. Using PowerPoint create a presentation to “sell” your logo. It will be 3-5 slides long. The first slide describes the features of the new logo. Include the logo itself, along with text describing the color selection, font choice, image choice (if used), etc.
  3. For the second slide create a one-page ad that combines images, words, and the logo itself, that introduces the “new” IBM to the employees, customers, and shareholders.
  4. For the last few slides, develop a written rationale as to how your design addresses the values of the organization and how the new logo would be perceived by the employees, customers, and shareholders. These three, very different audiences may perceive the logo in very different ways.

.Evaluate the effectiveness of the organization’s HR policies and processes that are designed to promote a diverse workforce.

Assignment 1: Employment Laws, Policies, and Processes

Imagine that you are the Director of the HR Department at your current organization or an organization with which you are familiar. You are responsible for delegating duties to your team for the selection, development, and management of both the new and current employees. You must ensure that your organization is diverse and follows all employment laws.

(Note: You may create and / or make all necessary assumptions needed for the completion of these assignments. In your original work, you may use aspects of existing processes from either your current or a former place of employment. However, you must remove any and all identifying information that would enable someone to discern the organization[s] that you have used.)

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:

1.Outline one (1) job interview process, and document the methods that you must use to select the right person for available positions. Determine two (2) employment laws that you must consider in the process in question, and examine the key ramifications of the organization’s lack of enforcement of said laws. 2.Suppose your same organization decides on an unconventional workforce comprised primarily of independent contractors and temporary workers. Predict three (3) issues that you may encounter in building relationships with each type of worker. Next, examine two (2) laws that you must follow during the relationship building process, and specify the manner in which each law would help in the relationship building process.

3.Evaluate the effectiveness of the organization’s HR policies and processes that are designed to promote a diverse workforce. Next, outline one (1) strategy for the organization that recognizes affirmative action. Include a plan to mitigate both the glass ceiling effect and reverse discrimination within your organization. Support your response with at least two (2) examples that illustrate the major benefits of the plan to the organization.

4.Use at least three (3) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

. Define a structure that contains the following four members: (1) a character member that holds the row used for the torpedo’s position on the board –

For this homework assignment, you will edit your Homework 6 to add functionality to play a simplified version of the classic game of Battleship on the screen/console. You shall organize your program into three files:

• prgm.h will hold #includes, #defines, templates of any structure types, and a list of function prototypes.

• main.c will hold the local #include file as well as the main()function for the program.

• func.c will hold the local #include file as well all other functions (except main(), of course) used in the program.

2. Define a structure that contains the following four members: (1) a character member that holds the row used for the torpedo’s position on the board – note that this character may be a single character in the range ‘A’ – ‘J’; (2) an integer member that holds the column used for the torpedo’s position on the board –note that this integer has a range 1 – 10; (3) an integer member that keeps track of the number of hits on the aircraft carrier – note that an aircraft carrier is sunk

after 5 hits; and (4) an integer member that keeps track of the number of hits on

the battleship – note that a battleship is sunk after 4 hits.

3. Update the function to display the game board by adding another parameter used to indicate whether or not to “reveal” the solution with ship positions visible or to display the current, active board. In displaying the board, you will display an ‘X’ for each position where a torpedo shot hit either ship and ‘O’ for each position where a torpedo shot missed a ship. If the “reveal” is not set, you will display a blank space for any position that is open (i.e., no ship is assigned, nor has a torpedo shot been fired) or contains a ship. If the “reveal” is set, you will still display a blank space for any position that is open, but will you display a ‘B’ for each position containing a battleship that has not been hit and an ‘A’ for each position containing an aircraft carrier that has not been hit. You will call this function to display the updated board after every torpedo shot fired by the user. During the game, “reveal” will not be set. However, after the game is won or lost, you will call this function with “reveal” set to display the board.

4. Add a value-returning function to check the status of the shot fired by the user, given the two-dimensional array for the board passed by reference and a pointer to a variable of the structure defined above. This function is called by main()and checks the status of the user-fired torpedo (i.e., hit, miss, duplicate shot, etc.) and updates the board as a result of the shot fired. This function will also update the number of hits on either ship if either an aircraft carrier or battleship was hit and display a message to the screen/console if a particular ship was sunk. And finally, this function will return a value to indicate whether or not the game is won (i.e., both ships are sunk) or lost (i.e., at least one position on at least one ship has not been shot).

5. Inside main(), you will add a loop to play the game until either the game is won (i.e., both ships are sunk) or the user has fired all of his/her allocated torpedo shots without sinking both ships. For each turn, the user will enter a position (e.g., B7) corresponding to the position on the board where the torpedo will be fired. If the user enters an invalid coordinate position, you will indicate that the torpedo cannot be fired at that location and re-prompt the user to enter the coordinates again (without incrementing the number of shots fired). You may assume that the user enters the position correctly as [char][int], though one of both may not be within the valid range defined. You will parse this input and store it in the structure variable that is passed to the function to check the status of the shot fired by the user. Following each turn, you shall display an updated version of the board. If the user has sunk both ships, you will indicate that the user has sunk both ships and how many shots were fired to accomplish this task. If the user was unable to sink both ships in the allocated number of shots, you are to indicate that the user was not able to sink both ships and then display the final updated board with “reveal” set so that the position(s) of the ships are shown.

Your functions should receive as arguments only the minimally needed ones of the appropriate type, and should a value of the appropriate type whenever a return value is needed.
