This module’s focus is on the Legal System, but in our examination of ethics, it’s important to pay attention to how unethical practices impact the law. Conduct some independent research on some newsworthy unethical practices in healthcare. Use those fact-based accounts as your basis for this assignment.

For this module’s assignment, write a 2-3 page fictional account about someone who committed an unethical act that threatened their healthcare practice. Your focus is on the internal struggle that took place within that person as well as the effect that the unethical action had on his or her career and the law. Be sure to cite any outside research sources and proofread your work prior to its submission.

Identify a health care organization for which a significant amount of information is available, in books, journals, reports, or on the Internet.

Assignment 1: LASA 2 – Development of a Healthcare Business Unit’s Strategy

Identify a health care organization for which a significant amount of information is available, in books, journals, reports, or on the Internet. Conduct an audit of the organization’s strategic assets based on the information you are able to gather from various sources. The audit you conduct will not be as thorough and detailed of an audit as the organization itself might conduct as you will not have access to the same inside information as internal auditors. Do your best to gather and report the following information.

Start with a general description of the service that the healthcare organization provides.  Include the mission statement for the organization.  If there is not one, create one you believe would best describe the mission of the organization.

The first part of your audit should address the organization’s historical financial performance and its current financial condition, as described in your textbook. A lot of the necessary data can be found in the organization’s annual report and its filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and state-level government regulatory agencies. Research sources such as business journals, magazines, and other media that report on these types of organizations.

The second part of the audit should describe in as much detail as possible what you consider to be the major resources and competencies of the organization.  Use a SWOT chart to categorize the most relevant points (these may be more narrative than quantitatively analytical). Try to identify assets that appear to be unique to the organization and that give it some competitive advantage over its rivals. Also make a note of areas in which the organization is weak, which might be the target of strategic attacks by those rivals.

Now consider the activities that are described in the value chain for this organization.  Which do you believe cost the most to perform?  What factors do you base your opinion on? What do you believe can be done to reduce the costs, thereby giving this organization a competitive edge?

Finally, consider that this organization would like to set up a satellite office in a nearby city.  In this satellite office they will make changes to their processes to address their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.  Develop a mission statement for this satellite office.  Create four strategic goals for this office, one for each SWOT category.

Use the HCM401 – LASA2 Template, to organize your work.

Make sure your final paper (6-8 pages) follows APA guidelines with a title page, reference page (include at least three scholarly references), in text citations, double space throughout, indent paragraphs 5 spaces and use section headers to differentiate the sections.(Moseley III, George B. . Managing Health Care Business Strategy. Jones & Bartlett Publishers, May 2008. pp. 48 – 51).

Analyze your paper from an outsider’s perspective. That will help you judge whether your thesis statement is well formed. Your thesis should give the reader a clear idea of what your essay will discuss.

Activity

In this activity, you’ll collect ideas for a public essay, research a chosen topic, create a draft, and revise it.

Part A

First, think about the different events that have influenced the world and society. Then, select a notable national or world event that has influenced you. Note the ways in which you can develop that topic.

Part B

Research your topic and list 2-4 reliable sources that you can use to write your essay. (Be sure to include the addresses of all the Internet sources.) Analyze in 1-2 sentences why each source is relevant to the topic you selected. You might want to consult these guidelines to help you to effectively carry out research on your selected topic.

Part C

Make notes as you develop your viewpoint and opinion based on your research. Then write the thesis for your essay.

Part D

Write a rough draft of your essay. After you’ve written the first draft, review and revise the draft. Follow your revisions with a round of proofreading to detect if you missed any errors during the review process. Before submitting your final draft consider the following points:

  • Analyze your paper from an outsider’s perspective. That will help you judge whether your thesis statement is well formed. Your thesis should give the reader a clear idea of what your essay will discuss.
  • Determine the type of audience you’re writing for and the purpose and message of your essay.
  • Make sure the evidence you use to support your claims is substantiated with suitable examples.
  • Make sure your evidence comes from well-researched and relevant sources.
  • Check that you’ve correctly quoted your sources.
  • Cut text that doesn’t seem to connect to the thesis statement or doesn’t fit with the rest of the essay.
  • Present your ideas in clear and concise language. Long, poorly worded phrases and sentences may confuse readers and reduce the impact of your essay.
  • Review your essay carefully for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.
