Determine how to strike the most appropriate balance between documentation and visuals within a presentation.

Part 1. Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

Think about giving a presentation.

·         Explain the benefit of emphasizing the background and needs of your audience during a presentation.

·         Determine how to strike the most appropriate balance between documentation and visuals within a presentation.

Part 2. Respond to the following post with a minimum of 100 words:

“When preparing a business presentation usually the topic of conversation can hint to what kind of audience you will be speaking too, but it is always best to prepare for the anomalies. By understanding the majority of your audiences background and needs you can properly give out information during the presentation. By having a powerful positioning statement you will gain the attention of your audience and by relating to them and their needs you build a sense of rapport. Also the more that you practice your speech out loud the better you become familiar with your notes and have a sense of authority because you are comfortable with what you are speaking about, this will also point out where spots in your presentation needs rework.

Typically when you are speaking you want to have approximately one slide per two minutes of presentation, this way you can have bold statements on the slide but still have your audiences attention on yourself. By crowding your slides will mass information it tends to draw away the attention from yourself and to the slide. Their needs to be a balance, the use of bullet points can be quite effective because it will give the audience a quick understanding of what you will discuss.” -Olga N.

Part 3. Reply to the following discussion in a minimum of 100 words:

“Knowing you’re audience is vital to a presentation, but knowing their background can be just as important-if not more. Emphasizing someone’s background can empathize with their personal life, history, or professional career. A speaker that does a little history of a few individuals or most, in the audience, can have a better chance of influencing them, in my opinion. Especially if the presentation is a persuasive one. I have personally attended presentations that were specific to personal situations in my life, and now I think back and wonder if the speaker did background research on some of us.

An example of this is, an audience of high school teenagers can be an easy background research. Most teens have common interests and can relate to one another, so social media trends are easy to stumble upon and be up to date with these applications. But, an audience of international corporate executives can have a variety of ethnicities, social practices, and specific lifestyles. A few words about some of their culture, respectfully, can spark a quick interest and the speaker some credibility.” -Charlie P.

Identify a consistent theme in two or more works by the same author and provide an in-depth analysis of that theme. You can, if you prefer, use one of the critical strategies from Option #1, however this is only one approach.

English 1B: Final Writing Assignment

Over the course of the semester we have examined three genres of literature: fiction in the form of the short story, poetry, drama and modern drama. As the semester progressed hopefully one or more of the short stories, poems, or plays resonated with you in some way – enough so that you are now willing to devote the final weeks of the semester to a brief, but intense, examination of one or more of these works and/or their authors.

You have three options for your final paper:

Option #1

For a previous paper you selected a critical strategy from those presented in Chapter 47 and used that approach as the organizing strategy for a discussion of a play of your choice. Now that you have some working knowledge of one or more of these strategies, again select one and use it as a platform from which to launch an examination of a selected work other than the play you used for Writing Assignment #4

Option #2

Identify a consistent theme in two or more works by the same author and provide an in-depth analysis of that theme. You can, if you prefer, use one of the critical strategies from Option #1, however this is only one approach. The question you are answering is the significance of your selected theme to the author, his or her work and audience. Thus, you will want to consider “why” this theme appears and/or why it is important. You may want to consider the author’s own history, the contexts of the time (historical setting) in which the works were written, or the significance of the settings (where the works are located geographically).

Option #3

Select an author and examine his or her work(s). After doing so, explain in your paper why one of this author’s works should be included as part of the literature read and discussed in an English 1B class. Basically, this is an argument that this author is important and cannot be ignored in a class devoted to examining significant literature and using critical thinking and logical analysis as the basis for that examination. This is not to be written in the first person, and it is not a review.

The format is, as for all college writing, MLA. This, of course, means that all sources, minimum of four, two of which must be from published critical perspectives on your work(s) or author, will be properly documented and cross referenced with a works cited page. NO WIKIPEDIAWIKIQUOTES, SPARKS NOTES, OR SIMILAR CRUTCHES. The length of the paper is a minimum of six full pages, excluding the Works Cited page.

Here is the process we will use:

1. A written proposal

2. Outline

3. 1st Rough Draft – underlines and question marks

4. 2nd Rough Draft – unity and coherence

5. 3rd Rough Draft – editing

6. 4th Rough Draft – proofing

7. Final Draft

No final draft will be accepted without the proposal, outline, and four rough drafts. If you have any questions don’t’ hesitate to ask.

Explain the impact of racial disparities in drug use and arrest rates on minority groups and communities and identify ways to address these disparities.

To complete this assignment, follow the steps below, pasting or typing the questions into a Microsoft Word document and responding to each question with thought and detail. Include a title page and a reference page in correct APA format. Incorporate in-text citations when you refer to the course material.

  1. To get started, first review data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), located in the Resources. The survey is a part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Data Archive, provided by the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research. When you select one of the options, such as heroin use, you can then specify how the data is presented. To see statistics for heroin use based on race and ethnicity, select the “Heroin Use” link. Then select the following options in the drop-down lists:
    • Measure of Heroin Use: Select “Ever Used Heroin” first. Then select the other options to create additional graphs and charts as you would like.
    • Respondent Characteristics: Select “Race and Ethnicity.”
    • Confidence intervals: Use the default option, “(None displayed).”
    • Chart Options: Choose any of the options for viewing the chart, depending on how you would like the data to appear.

Repeat this procedure for the other illegal drugs on the list, including marijuana (illegal in most states), crack, and cocaine. You can open each table in a new tab in your browser, which makes it easier to compare the data.

Based on your review of the data, answer the following questions. Be sure to use specific data from the NSDUH charts and graphs to illustrate your points. Identify the name of the tables or graphs (for example, “Ever Used Heroin by Race” is the title of the table and graph produced when you followed the initial steps above).

Question 1: Describe differences in illegal drug use based on race and ethnicity. Which racial and ethnic groups are most likely to use each illegal drug? Your response should contain at least 150 words.

Next, take a look at drug arrests by race and ethnicity. This data is available on the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports Web site in their annual report, “Crime in the United States.” For the 2013 data on arrests, go to Persons Arrested, which is located in the Resources. You will see a list of table numbers on this page. Tables 43, 49, 55, 61, and 67 show data that include categories for race and ethnicity. Click on each table number to see the full tabular data. You will need to scroll down each table to look for the line labeled “Drug abuse violations.” Note that Table 43 provides the overall national picture regarding drug abuse arrests, while the other tables provide specific regional data based on the classifications of cities, counties, suburbs, and nonmetropolitan areas.

Based on your review of this data, answer the following questions. Be sure to use specific data from the FBI tables to support your points and clearly identify which tables you are referring to by specifying the table number.

Question 2: Describe differences in drug arrests based on race and ethnicity. Which racial and ethnic groups are most likely to be arrested for drug abuse violations? Your response should contain at least 150 words.

Question 3: Compare and contrast the data on drug use with drug arrests. What factors account for the discrepancy between who uses illegal drugs and who is arrested for drug abuse violations? To what extent have public policies or law enforcement strategies contributed to this disparity? Use at least one of this unit’s course readings to support your response. Your response should contain at least 250 words.

Question 4: What impact have the disparities you identified in Question 3 had on minorities and minority communities? What policy changes would you recommend for addressing these disparities? Discuss at least two potential solutions or strategies; these can be community-based, legislative (at the state or federal level), or law enforcement strategies. Your response should contain at least 250 words.

Requirements

  • Describe and analyze trends related to drug use and drug arrests based on race and ethnicity.
  • Address the connection between criminal justice policies and strategies and the racial and ethnic disparities in drug use and arrest rates.
  • Explain the impact of racial disparities in drug use and arrest rates on minority groups and communities and identify ways to address these disparities.
  • Refer to and cite the course material in correct APA format.
  • Ensure responses meet the minimum indicated word counts, with a total length of approximately 2–3 pages.
