HRM Competencies

In this unit’s studies, you have read about the many challenges an HRM professional faces in the workplace, and the integral part the HRM professional plays in strategic planning.

For this assignment, you can select one of two options. Choose Option 1 if you are currently an HRM professional. Complete Option 2 if you are studying to become an HRM professional. Do not complete both assignments.

Option 1: Current HR Professional

For this assignment, review the nine primary competency domains as they are listed in the SHRM article “HR Competency Model Unveiled,” which is linked in the Resources. Then, assess your organization against these competency domains. If you are not currently employed, select an organization about which you will be able to find sufficient information in order to complete this assignment. You might also use an organization where you were formerly employed.

In a 2–3-page paper, complete the following:

  • Describe the role of the HRM professional in human capital management.
  • Describe the key human capital management competencies of the SHRM HR Competency Model.
  • Identify and describe key business trends, issues, and opportunities, and their applicability to your organization.
  • Assess your organization against these competency domains.
  • Assess yourself as an HRM professional against the SHRM HR Competency Model.
  • Review the HRM professional competencies and suggest changes that reflect current trends, issues, and opportunities you have identified.

Option 2: Career Changer

For this assignment, review and describe the nine competency domains listed in the “HR Competency Model Unveiled” article linked in the Resources. Use the Capella University Library to research current business trends, issues, and opportunities in human capital management that are relevant for your organization and industry. If you are not currently employed at an organization, select a similar one about which you will be able to find sufficient information in order to complete this assignment. You might also use an organization where you were formerly employed.

In a 2–3-page paper, complete the following:

  • Describe the role of the HRM professional in human capital management.
  • Describe the SHRM HR Competency Model.
  • Identify and describe current business trends, issues, and opportunities, and their applicability to your organization.
  • Describe how you would use the SHRM HR Competency Model to respond to the business trends, issues, and opportunities identified.
  • Assess yourself as an HRM professional against the SHRM HR Competency Model.

Format your paper according to APA standards, including the following:

  • A title page.
  • An abstract.
  • Proper page margins, spacing, and page numbers.
  • Appropriate headings and subheadings.
  • Citations.
  • A reference list.

Develop strategies to encourage employees. How will you reward them for their performance and support them during difficulty?

Throughout this course, you analyzed your current work environment to identify their acquiring, developing, and training practices. Employees are the biggest asset and contribute to the culture and overall performance of the organization. The final part of this project requires you to determine how to leverage on the human capital within your organization. Use the research you have complied throughout this course to determine how to appropriately develop and motivate your employees.

Develop a final written proposal (1,250-1,500 words), discussing performance indicators, rewards and incentives, and a plan for motivating employees. Your proposal must include the following:

  1. An evaluation of the current employee status. Describe tasks and performance indicators that contribute to the overall performance on the job.
  2. Develop strategies to encourage employees. How will you reward them for their performance and support them during difficulty?
  3. Describe strategies to leverage on employee assets. How will you identify their strengths and use them to better the performance and skills of individual employees?
  4. Describe a vision for the overall culture you aspire to develop in your organization.
  5. How will you integrate rewards and incentives to remain competitive in your market and appeal to your employees?

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

Email and text messages are not always the most appropriate channel for a particular message.  Think of a specific instance in your life where you used IM or e-mail and the message sent was not the message received.

First, describe the kinds of problems caused by selecting this channel of communication? Could these problems been prevented by using a different channel for sending the message?  Make sure to use the transactional communication model and its variables in illustrating/discussing the situation.

You may also utilize other specific examples of co-workers or fellow students to supplement your discussion.  Interviewing subjects can add a great deal of support.

Explain the types of messages you think are not appropriate for sending via e-mail or text message? Explain situations in which you believe it would be beneficial to send the message via e-mail or text message? Explain your response with examples.

Finally, locate a current article about sending and receiving email/text messages.  Summarize the article and attach the original copy of the article to your essay.

Managing cultural differences in the workplace can be challenging.  Your task is to explore the difficulty of managing cultural differences in the workplace by reading an article on this topic.   If you have difficulty locating an article, contact an ECU librarian for assistance.  After reading your selected article, answer the following questions:

Give a brief overview of the article you read.  Make sure to highlight any new beneficial principles/terminology used by this author or reference information from our textbook.

What advice did you gain from this article? If not, why?

Describe a current workplace or classroom situation in which you have witnessed cultural differences as challenged. In your opinion, how could this situation be modified?

Attach a copy of the article you utilized to the final copy of your essay.

Violence in the workplace has a lot to do with a negative communication climate and poorly managed conflicts. Conflict management and a positive relationship climate can benefit both the employee and client.

Locate a current article on conflict management. Summarize the article and your viewpoint of the article.

Next, describe experiences you have had or witnessed in a current negative working climate (this could be a workplace or even school) that deals poorly with conflicts. You can change the names to protect the innocent. Make sure to include examples of situations for support.  Make sure to utilize our article/textbook terminology to supplement your discussion.

Second, explain how this negative working climate could be improved.  Locate three websites that could be utilized by the organization for help in dealing with conflict management. Briefly explain what each site offers.

Explore the working-world of adults with Autism, Asperger Syndrome, and ADHD.

First, explain each of these particular disorders.  Locate one article discussing either Autism, Asperger Syndrome, or ADHD in the workplace.  Summarize this article and your viewpoint.

Discuss:  What challenges do employees and supervisors face in accommodating and providing positive work climates for these workers?  What are the benefits of employing and working with Autistic, Asperger, or ADHD co-workers?

Describe any personal experiences you have had or someone you know. How has researching this particular subject changed your current/ past viewpoint and/or judgment of these employees?

Locate a recent article exploring the impact of language and social media creating negative effects on companies or individual employees. OR locate a recent article exploring the impact of an individual’s behavior destroying a company’s image on social media.

First, summarize the article and explain the situation(s).  Include your viewpoint as well.

Discussion options:  What responsibility do employers have to ensure that their employees create a positive impact on their organization’s public profile?  What policies should be adopted regarding employee social media use and behavior?  What rights should employees have?  Should there be a universal business policy regarding all employee behavior on social media and publicly throughout the United States?  Feel free to pose and offer other observations or questions for discussion.

Evaluate the type of impact the violation had on the organization then determine two (2) ways the organization could mitigate the issue. Justify your response.

Using the Internet, select and research an employment law case no greater than five (5) years old.

Write a three to four (3-4) page brief in which you:

  1. Summarize the issue of the case, and then explain the employment law that was violated.
  2. Evaluate the type of impact the violation had on the organization then determine two (2) ways the organization could mitigate the issue. Justify your response.
  3. Based on your research, determine if a policy was or was not in place during the violation. Then, recommend a communication for all employees to enhance the knowledge of the policy. Support your response.
  4. As a HR Manager, explore an organization you worked for or familiar with, then suggest three (3) ways you could make the organization violation free from employment law issues. Justify your response.
  5. Use at least three (3) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.
