You can use your current speech topic for this assignment and I would strongly suggest that you do so! However, please make sure that you edit and perfect the outline prior to turning it in with your final speaking assignment (SA6).

When you build a house, the first thing you do is plan and create the underlying structure of the house–the part of the house behind and within the walls that may not be noticed if it’s done well, but that will certainly be noticed if it’s done poorly. Speaking in public is similar in some ways to building a house. While audience notice a speaker’s delivery, they may not notice the organization of the speech unless it’s so poorly planned that the speech seems to ramble without a point. Good speaking, in contrast, follows patterns of practical reasoning that the audience can understand and accept, and good speakers tend to organize their speeches in ways that follow such patterns.

  1. In your initial post, use the handout about organizational patterns to help you briefly outline a speech that might employ one of those patterns. You only need to list the main points of the potential topic. Please steer clear of overdone speech topics, such as gun control, abortion, marijuana laws, exercise and dieting, or other popular but contentious social issues. Use the vocabulary from your readings to describe the types of evidence and logical patterns; you may include outside research for additional examples or explanation. Submit your completed outline for your primary post; please submit as text, not as an attachment, as attachments will not be graded. You should select a single outline structure (the category should be appropriate for your topic and outline type) and a single topic and create a basic outline for the discussion board. Cite every outside source you use, including your readings.

Examples from classmate

The outline I’ll be using is the Ascending pattern from the topical category. This is the most common speech form I’ve heard personally. It’s easy to follow and build upon, in most cases.

My speech is over why nursing homes should have service dogs for their patients.

I am starting with the least important points in my speech, then work my way up to the biggest points.

1. Everyone loves animals

1a. Animals, especially dogs, are an innate part of our culture

2. Dogs can do a lot of amazing things

2a. Rescue dogs, acrobatics, racing, military/police dogs, service dogs etc.

3. Nursing homes are lacking emotional stability for their patients

4. The answer is service dogs

4a. They can do multiple tasks and well as comfort the patients

4b. Keeps animals off the streets, out of animal shelters, and gives them something they were created to do.

Examples from classmate

The outline I chose was the problem-solution outline. I am going to continue with the speech on how verbal abuse effects children. With this will outline the problem, cause solution, identify the problem explain causes & how to fix the problem.

  • Main point- Verbal abuse can tear down the self esteem of children; reshaping how they see themselves causing underlying issues that are prevalent as you get older (statistically backed)
  • Explain the causes of the situation
  • Cause solution- Understanding what verbal is and recognizing triggers & what causes us to verbally lash out
  • Solution- RETHINK Method & Others methods to help understand how to refrain from using verbal abuse
  • Conclusion- To get the audience to think about how a few small, but impactful, words can build a child up vs. using language to tear down- ending with a quote

Topic: The benefits of implementing music therapy to reduce the stress/test anxiety in students before an exam (Using Problem-Solution arrangement Barnett (2017))

Specific Purpose Statement: To both inform and persuade the audience of the importance of improving one’s coping strategies as by the adoption of music therapy prior to the stressful situation of taking a test.

Thesis: The implementation of music therapy can decrease test anxiety and thereby stress in student’s regardless of major, and increase performance when done prior to test taking. Music therapy is beneficial because it reinforces the student’s positive coping mechanisms.

I.  Student’s test anxiety is a serious problem as it negatively impacts performance. (problem)

A. Find source that goes over defining what test anxiety is and maybe a brief outline of affects on person’s physiology when experiencing test anxiety (problems with recall and specific examples of where it brings the focus away from the test).

II. Music therapy can reduce test anxiety, stress and thereby increase performance of students on their exams. (solution)

A.  Cite study from International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health: Effects of Aromatherapy Combined with Music therapy on anxiety, stress, and fundamental nursing skills in nursing students: A randomized Controlled Trial (2019). Finding: “aromatherapy combined with music therapy was associated with a significant decrease in test anxiety, state anxiety, and stress, and significantly increased student’s fundamental nursing skill performance compared with the other separate intervention groups (p.9).

I. Participants were instructed to show up 40 minutes prior to test. Listened to music for 20 minutes prior to test (Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonota-as this song had already been demonstrated to reduce both test and state anxiety, improving bp, pulse rate and academic performance in college students (Son et al.,2019)

II. Random assignment to one of three intervention groups: 1)aromatherapy group 2)music therapy group 3) combined aromatherapy and music therapy groups.

III. Music therapy works by basically stimulating the nervous system and Son et al., 2019 make this point in showing how it specifically targets the limbic system in the brain, whose function is to control emotions (p.2). (argument can go better emotional control equals better coping and increased ability to focus whereas anxiety works against you by negatively stimulating the nervous system; music therapy prior to a test positively stimulates nervous system)

III

Find source that refutes benefit of music therapy’s benefit as to build credibility and opportunity for rebuttal.

Conclusion: (something like) In summary, test anxiety negatively impacts a student’s performance during test taking as there is a physiological basis of the anxiety impairing student’s ability. For numerous reasons, this anxiety acts as an impediment to calmly analyze a question and be confident in one’s ability to reason through problems and recall past information. Music therapy has been shown in research studies to provide a benefit to students with test-taking anxiety in reducing this anxiety and their stress levels which allow them to perform better on tests.

Was it the right choice for me at this point in my life or could it even be reachable?

DIscussion response APA 200

“A goal is a level of proficiency or standard of behavior we wish to attain within a specified period of time” (De Janasz, Dowd & Schneider, 2015).  I wanted to start off with this reference because this was how I looked at going back to school. I needed to set a goal for myself in order to get started. I am a 42-year-old male and I have decided to get my bachelors and enter the physician’s assistant program here at Keiser University.  I have been in the medical field for about 20 years now and feel the need to further my career. Goal-setting comes into play because I can’t just apply for the program and expect to get in. With goal-setting, you see many different ways to get to your end result. One way of motivation for me to achieve my goal would be to shadow a doctor and witness how they help sick.  This would allow me to see what I could do to better my skills and keep me sharp in the medical field. Productivity is another goal-setting benefit because working towards a goal actually creates productivity.  I also needed to see the value of what I was trying to achieve. Was it the right choice for me at this point in my life or could it even be reachable? My wife, kids, friends and boss played heavy on this discussion because they would ultimately be my main support. I needed to first see if this was a goal that could be reached due to having a full time job, a wife and kids. While reading through chapter 3, I read how goal-setting can really help someone make real changes and help with achieving their goals. I also learned about instrumental values and it is the “how’s” of goal-setting. Instrumental values would help me in reaching my end goal by keeping me in love with getting my physician’s assistant degree. The terminal values are where I see myself at the end of my goal. This is the reason I want reach my goal of becoming a PA, because I can see a much happier life and I will know that I help make people better.

Analysis: Describe some of the elements of art and principles of design that are used.

Art criticism is the process of gathering facts and information about a work of art and the artist to describe, analyze, interpret, and evaluate art. Critiques of art that are published online or in newspapers can cause an artist to have success or failure because ultimately, art criticism requires making a personal judgment call about a work of art.

For this assignment, you will play the role of art critic and write a review after attending the opening of an Impressionist exhibit in Paris, France. You need to determine if the painting you selected deserves to be given a place in the Louvre Museum of Art. You must be sure to justify your decision and not let your own personal taste influence you. You will use the four-step process of critiquing art to help you write this critique. Select 1 work of art by one of the following artists. Copy the piece of art from the chosen artist into a Word document. Include the name of the artist, the title of the art work, the materials used, and the year it was created.

  • Mary Cassatt
  • Pierre-Auguste Renoir
  • Claude Monet
  • Edgar Degas
  • Berthe Morisot
  • Gustave Caillebotte

Complete the following:

  • Use the four steps to critiquing art that are found in Chapter 9 of the Embracing Art textbook to develop a critique of the work. Be sure that you write a well-developed paragraph on each of the four areas, pointing to specific areas in the painting in your explanation:
    • Description: Give the facts about the work of art.
    • Analysis: Describe some of the elements of art and principles of design that are used.
    • Interpretation: After researching the work of art, what do you feel the message of the work is?
    • Evaluation: Based on everything you just described, you will give your own evaluation of the work and determine if the work deserves to be called a work of art.

Submit 1 Word document for this assignment. In-text citations and a list of references are required when including or paraphrasing any idea, fact, date, or other information from the textbook or other references.

What are some things that, if done, would make this approach successful? Some things that would make this approach successful would be simplified language, controlled emotions, skilled listening, and useful feedback per Sethi & Seth (2009).

Discussion response  150 words a piece.  APA format1 and 2 both get 150  they are separate responses1)My reaction to the scenario is that of dissatisfaction with the events that way of working in the office. I view the person in the case to be a victim of lack of proper understanding of the working needs amongst himself and the boss. If the situation were about me, I would most likely feel uncomfortable with my job, and I would have low motivation in doing my working in the morning. Such a boss would likely affect how effective I am when doing the different tasks and hence I would not want to work with them.Such a situation could have been avoided by having proper communication between the employees and the boss as well as having the appropriate planning of tasks to be completed. The employees should feel free to approach their boss and talk to him about their concerns without having to fear the person (De, Dowd, & Schneider, 2015). On the other hand, it could also have been avoided had there been a system for planning the next day’s activities on the evening of each day. Such a plan would guarantee that everyone knows what to start doing in the morning when they report to work. The first thing that needs to be done for the success to be archived is that there needs to be effective communication between the different parties involved. Communicating with the employees and the boss as well as doing it in a friendly way will make the approach to be successful. Second, creating a safe environment for working will also help to resolve the conflict as necessary (Koprowska, 2014). One of the things that must be avoided when solving the conflict is the misinterpretation of messages. This can happen when a message is understood in a different way other than what the person actually meant. One should also avoid enforcing their own decisions on other and decisions should be agreed upon unanimously.WC: 321ReferencesDe, J. S. C., Dowd, K. O., & Schneider, B. Z. (2015). How would you feel if you were the person this situation was about? My immediate reaction to the scenario is that my manager cannot read my mind, and more than likely has no idea that his/her routine causes such disruption to my performance.  Tactfully and honestly communicating, that his mid-morning arrival and change in work priorities for the day, is disruptive and non-productive for staff would be necessary feedback for initiating change.  If I were the manager in this scenario, I would really encourage and value feedback, letting me know how my workflow is disrupting others.  I would provide an open-door policy, also referred to as a culture of openness by De Janasz, Dowd, & Schneider (2015); so, staff would feel comfortable coming to me with ideas and concerns. 1.  How could this situation have been avoided? This situation could have been avoided with better communication and discussion about team goals and objectives.  According to De Janasz, Dowd, & Schneider (2015) leadership is about enabling, engaging, and building confidence in employees.  As the manager arrives each day it is common practice to do “rounding—walk about the office making an appearance, and greeting staff with little or no workflow interruptions, except for interchanging important information when necessary—engaging.  Various routine tasks should be delegated to staff for daily, weekly, or monthly completion—building confidence.  If a manager, has other tasks that need to be performed by staff, I would think it would be better to discuss and pre-plan instead of requesting to have task done as a same day priority task—building confidence in employees. 1.  What approaches to resolving this conflict are appropriate?Appropriate approaches to resolving this conflict would be by using accommodating, compromising, and collaborating strategies.  An accommodation strategy resolves a conflict with more concern for maintaining the relationship than with accomplishing a specific goal—this approach is suitable for trivial situations per De Janasz, et al. (2015).  A compromising strategy—splits the difference in a conflict, you agree to give up part of your goal and part of the relationship to reach agreement—this is effective for achieving temporary solutions.  A collaborating strategy is a win-win solution that involves energy, commitment, problem solving and negotiation skills.  This is appropriate when there is plenty of time and all parties want to maintain the relationship and a common solution per De Janasz and associates, (2015).  The best choice is collaboration, a well thought out and committed to solution; although use of accommodation and compromise are good secondary choices when needed. 1.  What are some things that, if done, would make this approach successful? Some things that would make this approach successful would be simplified language, controlled emotions, skilled listening, and useful feedback per Sethi & Seth (2009).  When discussing the situation with your manager you would need to keep control of your emotions while simply and honestly explaining the situation and your expectations for change.  Once you have stated your case, then allow for your manager to speak, while listening attentively to his/her perspective and solutions.  Finally, both parties share feedback for solutions to the problem, and then follow up as changes are implemented to verify solutions are working. 1.  What are some things to avoid when attempting to resolve this conflict? Why?Some things to avoid when attempting to resolve this conflict is do not be judgmental or disrespectful of your manager per Sethi & Seth (2009).  Pointing fingers or blame causes defensive reactions, and prevents resolution, while disrespectfulness harms relationships and also prevents solutions.  The best approach is to have empathy and state the facts plainly—state it like you would want it presented to you if the situation was reversed.  Kindness and openness go a long way when working to find solutions.  Another, welcomed approach by managers is presenting a problem, with a solution already in mind.  This shows your manager that you are proactive and engaged in finding a solution.WC: 490References:De Janasz, S., Dowd, K. & Schneider, B.
