Be sure to include clear and specific speaker notes for each slide. You must include a minimum of one image or graphic within your presentation. You must use at least two sources, with one being the textbook.

What are the relative merits of internal versus external recruitment? For this case, does the advantage of bringing new ideas and methods into the department overcome the disadvantage of resentment among current employees who might have wanted the job?

Overview

After reading the case, follow the instructions below in order to complete the assignment.  Note that the case study workbook you downloaded includes two sections: Case A and Case B.  Both sections are related to the same overall scenario, and you must read both in order to complete this assignment.  Students should utilize a minimum of three scholarly sources in order to research and answer the discussion questions for this case.

Requirements

Your report for the case study must include the following sections:

  • Cover page
  • Overview — Briefly summarize the case scenario (one or two paragraphs)
  • Discussion questions — Answer the discussion questions listed below
    1. What are the relative merits of internal versus external recruitment? For this case, does the advantage of bringing new ideas and methods into the department overcome the disadvantage of resentment among current employees who might have wanted the job?
    2. A large share of HR professionals have rated online recruiting as their best source of new talent, yet Conroy only utilized the local newspaper. What do you think about her strategy? What are some advantages and disadvantages of online recruiting she should have considered?
    3. The case makes it clear that Henderson needs more training and development. Examine the four approaches to employee development in your textbook (see Figure 8.1 in Chapter 8). Which approaches do you think would best help Henderson? Explain your reasoning.
    4. Conroy has a tough decision to make regarding Henderson’s future at Big Time Computers. Her options include (1) providing additional training in the hopes that his work improves, (2) moving him into a different job, or (3) terminating his employment. If you were the HR Director at the company, how would you recommend Conroy proceed? Explain why you would recommend that course of action, and one potential downside to that approach.
    5. There is no indication that the human resource department was involved during Henderson’s hiring process, or later on when Conroy realized he had some job performance issues. How could an effective HR department have helped Conroy (1) during the recruitment and selection process, and (2) in dealing with Henderson’s performance management issues? Provide specific examples.
  • Debriefing — Reflecting your thoughts and opinions based on the case
  • Reference page

Research

In addition to the case study itself, students should utilize a minimum of three scholarly sources, which can include the textbook, in order to complete this assignment.  These sources must be credible and scholarly (i.e., no blog posts or use of Wikipedia).  Industry organizations such as SHRM, as well as publications such as the Harvard Business Review and other peer-reviewed journals, are all good examples of credible sources. Remember to use parenthetical in-text citations in APA format throughout your paper to indicate the source of your information.

Format

All papers must be completed in APA format.  This assignment should be between 3-5 pages in length (the cover page and reference page do not count towards this minimum), and must be typed using Times New Roman 12-point font, double-spaced, and with one-inch margins. Papers should also be spell-checked and grammar-checked.

An abstract is not required, and will not count towards the 3-5 page length requirement if included.  It is preferred that students not copy and paste the discussion questions into their papers; if the questions are included, they will not count towards the page requirement minimum.

How’s the workload (remember, this is a condensed course)? It is supposed to be heavier than normal.

Need help wording my answers better for communications class; below are questions regarding the course my answers

are below the questions, just want to be able to better word my answers.

  • What works, what doesn’t?

I felt as the discussions did not only help the communication between my fellow students but also to get a different perspective on their thoughts for the subject that week. It gave me a different point of view and times helped me understand the reading, lesson in a different way. this also helping me understand and see the difference in culture even here in our class.

  • will update all the lectures? Any suggestions? Longer/shorter? Only voice & PowerPoint?

I actually enjoyed the video lectures, it felt as being in a classroom without having to leave my home. I have to take online classes due to my children being so young and sometimes miss out on the actual classroom feel. I enjoyed being able to have another form of learning besides the textbook.

  • How was the text? Did you actually read?

I did read the textbook, found it interesting and informative, it was filled with information and I especially enjoyed the summary’s at the end of the chapter.

  • What about the module Assignments? Quizzes?

As you stated this was a fast course and therefore work was a lot heavier than most courses. I believe this is the first course I felt a bit overwhelmed in. I took summer courses that were also fast course but for some reason I felt this one was than I struggled more with. The assignments were lengthy and with the amount of work given I felt as it should have been worth more points. The quizzes were the same as other courses, self explanatory the only difference was that these were timed and I felt as that didn’t give me enough time to write on the essay portions.

  • How’s the workload (remember, this is a condensed course)? It is supposed to be heavier than normal.

The workflow kept me on my toes, I tried to stay on top of the assignments and to keep that A but the amount of work was a bit overwhelming for me. I must admit that I felt a bit down after working so hard to keep up and somehow wasn’t able to. Its understanding that due to the time we have for this class this is un-avoidable.

  • If you’re familiar with other online courses, how did this course compare?

As stated before this was oddly enough the one course I have struggled the most with, the course wasn’t hard to follow it was just an overwhelming amount of work.

What are critical challenges that organizations (be they for-profit, nonprofit or public sector) have to understand and deal with in these difficult economic times and complex global work environment?

ONE DISCUSSION REPLY – AT LEAST 250 WORDS

Is ‘leadership’ just a vague term?

Recall national and world events from the past few years. Think about what is occurring in your workplace. Explore what is being discussed in the newspaper, nightly on TV, or in the various Internet forums.

As you reflect…

1.  What are critical challenges that organizations (be they for-profit, nonprofit or public sector) have to understand and deal with in these difficult economic times and complex global work environment?

2. What are the challenges that leaders face daily (managing staff, competition, technology, etc)?

3. What are the causes of these challenges? Dig deep – why is competition a challenge? Competition in         and of itself is not a challenge unless it digs into market share or ability to retain good employees.

Think to your past, your present, or look into the future…

4. What are critical leadership qualities and skills needed by organizational leaders to, not only be successful in operating their organization and ensure its growth,  but to engage their workforce members, collaborate with organizational and community partners, and serve society-at-large?

Next, dialogue with your cohort members about your reflections on the above leadership and professional integrity questions. Provide rationale and examples to support your thoughts and insights. In other words, if you see a post that prompts you to agree, dive in and explore your basis for agreement. If you see things from a different perspective, do the same. Jump into the conversation, and feel free to agree to disagree, just justify your stance and position – if we keep it diplomatic, we don’t have to agree, all of the time!
