The reason for writing this story is to create awareness with the audience of the measures adopted by him to read and write and thus he appeals to the logos. He provides examples as to what brought him to the present level and his travails in the process. This is a true story relating to the suffering, loss of dignity and self-respect, loss of identity, and in short the existence of the slave was difficult for the printed page to capture. He makes liberal use of pathos in various parts of the article. He uses this device to derive the sympathy of his audience and to make them reason about his pleas.

Though the reading applies to all audiences, his emphasis seems to be directed at the sufferers, the African-Americans, as they can connect well with his experiences. Douglas writes “The more I read, the more I was led to abhor and detest my enslavers. I could regard them in no other light than a band of successful robbers, who had left their homes, and gone to Africa, and stolen us from our homes. and in a strange land reduced us to slavery. I loathed them as being the meanest as well as the wicked of men.

” This makes it clear that he is trying to educate the audience and the white audience should regret the way they treated the slaves. The emotional world of the audience becomes one with that of Douglass and the suffering slave community. At one stage of the story, he makes mention of his sterling achievement about being able to read finally. He must have felt as if emerging out from a dark cave to a sun-lit area. This was possible only with his newfound ability to read and write. &nbsp.That was a big accomplishment for him and he was proud of his endeavors to get at that turning point in his life.

Durkheim’s most significant theoretical contribution to the field of criminology is his formulation of the concept of anomie. According to Durkheim’s theory, society has the need and the moral right to regulate the behavior of its citizens. When society is in a state of rapid transition, the rules of society break down and people no longer can appraise their situation, “ambition was perpetually stimulated but never satisfied (Walter 1972). This condition Durkheim called “acute anomie” (Gottfredson and Hirsch 1990, p. 54). Chronic anomie occurs when overwhelming importance is attached to economic progress as the supreme goal in and of itself and a secondary consideration is given to the regulation of human conduct and the control of individual ambition.

These conditions which prevailed in the nineteenth century contributed significantly to the variety of social problems observed in that society (Durkheim 1992).According to Merton’s theory, deviance is most likely in societies in which success is a major societal objective but where many of the inhabitants are unable to acquire the material possessions or social status that denote success. His theoretical argument is formulated in terms of the societally recognized goals that individuals strive for and the institutionalized means used to regulate access to these desired objectives (Gottfredson and Hirsch 1990).

Merton recognizes that these goals and means are not equally available to all individuals because of the differentiated class and ethnic structure of American society. Striving for success within a society that is achievement-oriented, some individuals for whom traditional paths to achievement are closed follow illegitimate or deviant means to attain success within that society Although this theory was originally developed in terms of American society, it has been applied to many of the world’s other industrialized societies as an explanation of the persistence of criminal behavior (Merton 1967).

The other similarity between Durkheim and Merton is an understanding of the social impact on an individual and his behavior.

Inequality within the society can hinder social interaction and create discrimination if the society does not pull together to help the less fortunate (Jacobs 2010, pp. 61-62). The development of society will ensure efficiency, quality, productivity, and cohesion within society. In this respect, poor people are of two main groups namely, the deserving poor and the undeserving poor. Certain policies and programs help in dealing with the deserving poor and the undeserving poor, so that the overall society can be uplifted economically, socially, spiritually, and intellectually (Segal 2010, pp. 191-193). In as much as human service organizations regularly engage in social development programs, the concept of ‘deserving and ‘undeserving’ poor does not entirely in the development and implementation of social policies and programs.

The concept of deserving and undeserving poor has sparked heated debate in various political, social, and economic platforms across the globe. The deserving poor are people who are poor because of circumstances outside their control or unfortunate incidents such as unemployment, accidents, and job layoffs. On the other hand, the undeserving poor, just as the name suggests, are poor people who are entirely responsible for their poverty perhaps because of drunkenness and laziness (Romano 2014,&nbsp.pp. 23-24). It is difficult to allocate the right resources to the less fortunate because of the mixture of the deserving and undeserving poor within any given society.

Some cases truly deserve consideration, for example, of the elderly and the disabled.
