Anthropology of the Kikuyu in Africa Being a distinctively large community in Kenya, the community is one of the earliest known inhabitants of the country next to their counterparts the Maasai. Their traditional setting was quite contemporary as they were quite advanced in their systems of governance. In the articles I reviewed they address the interaction of world-known anthropologist and archeologist Louis Leakey. Having been born and brought up within the kikuyu traditional setting his knowledge of the anthropology of the community is impeccable.

This was during the colonization period in which the country had being colonized by the British. Similarities between the two articles:Both articles are on Leakey interacted with the kikuyu people learning their custom, beliefs and ways of life.In both articles, the kikuyu are viewed as a community with a highly developed structure in term of their social setting whereby the interaction between the community members is very close.Differences between the articlesIn the first article is mainly about that Louis Leakey wrote but remained unpublished till after his death while the second one is about his upbringing in the local setting which later molded his archeological career.

In the first article, the kikuyu herbalists are noted to have developed a vaccine against small pox which was long before the evolution of medicine and the settling of the Europeans in their country. In the second article however, this information is not written.In the book that Leakey wrote, it is evident that he had in depth knowledge of the Kikuyu ways of life as he even writes about their customary ways of treating the dead while in the second article, his articulation with the community is shown by the fact that he underwent the customary initiation process.

Psychological stress management involves the attempt to reduce the psychological effects of stress while biological stress management involves the attempt to reduce the biological effects of stress management. Psychological researchers have found out that the psychological stress reduction methods include: relaxation, physical activity and exercise, cognitive techniques, increasing hardiness, and stress inoculation therapy. On the other hand, biological methods of stress management include the use of drug therapies.

Biological research shows that stress can be managed mainly by using drug therapy methods. Research indicates that drugs control biological effects of stress. hence they can help in stress management. Two main categories of research can be used to manage stress: Beta-Blockers (BBs) and Benzodiazepines (BZs). Beta-blockers reduce the effects of Adrenaline while Benzodiazepines causes a natural anti-anxiety substance to reduce stress.One group of the researchers who contributed to biological methods of stress management is Kahn et al (1986).

The researchers conducted a research involving 250 patients over eight weeks. They tested the effectiveness of anxiety related to stress. The researchers grouped the people into two groups. One group of people with anxiety was given a drug while the other group was given a placebo. Placebo is a substance with no effects on the body. In the experiment, both groups of patients were given medications without knowing whether it is because of the pharmacological properties or due to psychological factors.

The research found out that Benzodiazepine is more effective in managing stress than placebo. BZ reduces the disabling effects of anxiety quickly. BZs catalyze the action of GABA, a form of natural anxiety relief. As a result, a person becomes calmer. Research also indicates that BZs reduce the activity of Serotonin which causes anxiety in the body. Hildago et al (2001) used a Meta-analysis approach to study the effectiveness of BZs in the reduction of anxiety, and they found out that BZs reduced stress more than any other anti-depressant.

Another point of great importance that I picked up was that one’s mind should not be filled with preconceived notions and opinions when trying to weigh the pros and cons and decipher between the right and the wrong. Most people just accept the facts as they are and never bother to oppose or refute it. They present a wrong picture that they have understood it completely and sometimes they commit the great mistake in rejecting the truth.

In a subject like geometry, the desired result is obtained by strictly following the rules. This is not so in a subject like philosophy because there are two sides to the coin which is open to argument because no argument is free from mistakes.
