Running Head: SOFTWARE PIRACY Global Information System – Software Piracy and Section # of Piracy Rates in AsiaThe piracy rates in Asia Pacific increased to 61 percent in 2009 with the software companies bearing losses of over US$ 15 billion (Business Software Alliance, 2009). Many countries in the Asian region are taking steps to reduce piracy but the problem remains worst in the countries with highest growth rates. According to the news release by Business Software Alliance, worldwide piracy grew from 38% to 41 % from 2008.

The higher rates in piracy are attributed to the rise in the shipment of PCs to China and India. These countries are the high piracy countries. Main Issues to ConsiderThe availability of pirated software over the internet free of cost or a minimal cost is the main issue to be considered by the company. Internet laws in the Asian countries do exist but most of the countries such as Pakistan and Nepal do not take any action for the distribution of pirated copies of software. With the increase in broadband penetration and download speed, it is very difficult to manage the software assets by a company in Asian region.

Torrents and other sites on the internet which charge a minimal price from the consumers for software are increasing every day. However, the main problem for the software companies is not the home users but the small businesses and firms, which purchase non-branded PCs and get pirated software bundled with it (Business Software Alliance, 2009). Many managers in the Asian countries fail to implement the policies of managing their software assets and they purchase pirated copies of software in order to cut costs.

These managers and even owners to small and medium businesses fail to understand the benefits efficiencies of original software use. Most of the firms and management in these Asian countries do not get proper education or training on the issue of software piracy (Coombes, 2010). The global economic recession has caused many firms to give up their policies on software policies as they are not able to bear the huge cost of purchasing new software for their business needs. The buying power of the households has also fallen which is one of the many factors of increasing rates in piracy.

However, the company should not forget that the Asia Pacific is the hardest hit region by the economic crisis in the world. The future economic improvements in these countries are also uncertain as these countries are under development and not yet part of the developed world.Another issue that the software firm has to consider is the spread of internet access which is driving up the level of piracy. Over the next five years, 460 million users are expected to get internet access in developing countries (Business Software Alliance, 2009).

Technology and Legal Means to Safeguard our Intellectual PropertyForce the government to initiate government driven educational programs for individuals and small businesses and to take enforcement actions against software piracyPartner with branded PC vendors in Asian countries for giving preinstalled software bundled with the new PCsPartner with internet websites providing pirated software copies on the internet to purchase software from the software company and sell it to the online users at a lower costChange the distribution model by offering free trial version of the software over the internet to encourage the purchase of fully functional softwareBibliographyBusiness Software Alliance.

Walmart Strategy in China Walmart Strategy in China Firms that attempt to enlarge their home market base t foreign countries have toadapt their operations to fit in the peculiarities and preferences of each local market. In reference to examination from different economist from China, proceedings regarding Walmart market have been difficult all through. However, China is not the first nation to experience difficulties in implementing Walmart market. Other nations that have been in the sector are Germany band Korea.

Nevertheless, the phenomenon has been resulting to an efficient running in USA because of the following factors. These include cost controls, aiming at neglected niche, employees, suppliers, and distribution system among others (St-Maurice, Claudia, and Hsinhsin, 2008).In reference to Mr. Chan an economist in China, a greater number of businesses emphasis on fresh foods selection, thus visit a Walmart at most twice a day. He also argues that an upscale retailer in the country contrasts with the budget conscious reflection, thus developing at an exceptionally high rate.

This is the strategy behind its success in USA (St-Maurice, Claudia, and Hsinhsin, 2008).On the other hand, Caffefour refers to international hyper chains located in Courcouronnes. This is in France. They are the largest hypermarkets in the world. The structure of these stores favors areas with high population than Walmart markets. This is an evident that China will suit the Carrefour strategy. In reference to the SWOT analysis, factors favoring the prosperity of Caffefour companies are more than those favoring Walmart.

In reference to China’s politics, there is a sustainable environment, meaning that threats are minimal. However, the two strategies have different strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities. China being the nation with the highest population favors hypermarket as consumers will get attendance under one roof (St-Maurice, Claudia, and Hsinhsin, 2008).ReferencesIan St-Maurice, I., Claudia, S. and Hsinhsin T. Create a 7 pages page paper that discusses effects of japans reliance on nuclear energy. However, there are concerns over the effects of nuclear-related activities on the health and safety of the human race.

Japan is among the countries that have embraced nuclear energy production, meaning that the country is becoming more reliant on nuclear energy to as the main source of fuel. In fact, Japan, according to The New York Times, relies on nuclear reactors for about 30 percent of all electricity needs (11). However, in March 2011. Japan suffered one of the worst nuclear accidents in world history. The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant experienced a meltdown caused by the combined effects of an earthquake and a tsunami. The 9.0 earthquake and the subsequent 45-foot tsunami were too much for the power plant to withstand thus causing the meltdown. The meltdown led to the emission of radioactive materials into the atmosphere that threatened the lives of the people living near the plant. The events of the Daiichi nuclear plant in 2011 form the basis of this discussion. This paper seeks to identify and analyze the effects of Japan’s reliance on nuclear energy and how the safety of nuclear is undermined by waste disposal and meltdowns.

In accordance with meltdowns, nuclear energy comes from fuel rods that require to be kept underwater to ensure cool temperatures in order to prevent the rods from melting. A reduction in the amount of cooling water would cause the rods to overheat and melt, thus exerting pressure on the reactor. Such pressure could make the reactors to burst and start emitting radioactive material into the atmosphere. Any country dealing with nuclear energy needs to ensure that nuclear plants are routinely inspected to measure the amount of stress the reactors can withstand. Being heavily reliant on nuclear energy, Japan should be in the lead of ensuring that its nuclear plants are resistant to meltdowns.

Washington Post states that a report released by an independent parliamentary commission, the affected power plant had been already weakened by the earthquake, prior to the tsunami (1). Such a report is worrying, considering how prone Japan is to earthquakes. In an even more daunting admission, the Tokyo Electric Power Company which operates the Daiichi plant revealed that it had failed to take adequate measures to prevent the reactors from melting.

Review The article is a news report about an accidental chemical spill in the science block of the Baylor The spill was immediately reported following which HazMat and fire fighters evacuated the building and neutralized the spill. A researcher working in a chemical lab of the sciences department reported accidental spilling of the chemical Isobutyl cyanide due to a break in the container. The researcher however, immediately placed the broken container under the exhaust hood and raised the chemical alarm.

This was the right move on behalf of the student as inhalation of the chemical could have caused serious problems to all those within the lab. The fire fighters and Hazardous material (Hazmat) response teams who reached the scene evacuated about 200 students from the building. It took some time for the Hazmat team to organize its decontamination set up after which they entered the building for the clean up process. The team reported that less than 1 ml of the chemical had spilled inside the lab and that the spill occurred only within the lab.

However due to the hazardous nature of the chemical it took some time for the clean up process to finish and the spill was neutralized at about 5 pm. The surrounding premises were closed for safety reasons between 3 and 5 pm and classes in the building were also cancelled. It was only after the cleanup was complete students were allowed back inside the building. The prompt reporting made by the researcher immediately after the spill was crucial for the quick rescue and cleaning up process. In addition, putting the chemical container under the exhaust hood prevented further spill and inhalation of the chemical, which could have led to serious consequences if inhaled.

These steps followed by the researcher without getting panicky are noteworthy. It would be a good example for other students to follow the procedure incase such incidents occur again. The Hazmat team also did a commendable job given the fact that the chemical was potentially hazardous if inhaled accidentally. The neutralization of the spill was carried out by careful planning by the team and only after the entire safety set up was in place in order to avert any mishap during the clean up. The entire process of the rescue operation was done in a planned and efficient manner due to which there was no injury reported.

The fact that the Hazmat team performed the set up without any hurry is an indication of their commitment and dedication to the work as any job done hastily without prior planning would not give satisfactory results. Thus the team has done a commendable job right from the beginning till the end and the hazardous effect of the chemical spill was averted successfully. Reference:Tolbert, P. (2009).
