Performance

Gender Performance (750 words max)

Throughout this semester we have looked at several different arguments relating to the social construction of gender including how it is constructed, how it has changed, and how stereotypes regarding gender are reinforced. Your task for this essay is to develop a persuasive argument convincing someone who believes gendered behavior is completely determined by biological sex to believe that gender is a social construction. You should clearly define social construction/gender performance and then proceed with your persuasive argument. Each argument you make, MUST be supported with cited evidence. Make sure to have clear reasons for the existence of the social construction of gender and support each with research. Feel free to bring in outside examples and artifacts to more fully support your argument. There is no word limit to your answer. You should have at least three complete arguments in your essay.

History

(500 words max)

The history reading goes into great detail about the advances in the womens rights movement as well as movements related to masculinity. For this question, pick three events discussed in the reading and make an argument as to why those events are still relevant today. For this question you need to: FIRST: explain the event, to show me you understand the significance of the event. SECOND: make an argument as to why EACH event is still relevant today. In order to do this you need to find an example either in popular media or current events which makes the event relevant today. You will need to CITE an outside source to support why your event is still relevant today. So if you pick suffrage as one of the major events that is still relevant you need to find a current example (and cite your source) that illustrates how relevant the event is.

Using digital devices

What is the technology you identified and what are the purposes and uses of this technology?
What are the problems of existing technologies and how will the new technologies solve the problems?
How will the new technologies change, support, or extend current ways of doing things?
Which group of people will benefit most from this new technology?
What is your opinion of using this new technology? Do you think this new technology will succeed? Or do you think it is just a passing fad, waiting to die off? Can you imagine a scenario where you are using the technology? What do you think is the main assumption of this technology? (For example, an assumption for a 3D TV is that people would not mind wearing 3D glasses while watching TV; an assumption for a smart watch is that people will use the watch while exercising or sleeping, and people will be comfortable using the small touch screen). Do you agree with these assumptions?
