Oh, how things have changed since the last

edition of Resource Management for Individuals

and Families. The latest census reveals that

Americans are within mere percentage points of

being a majority single nation. Only 51 percent of

adults today are married. Twenty-eight percent of

all households have just one person—the highest

level in U.S. history.

The economy worldwide continues to strug-

gle. Everywhere, families make sacrifices and

postpone expenses. More than ever before, people

want to know what actions to take and what goals

to pursue. The word “sustainability” has taken on

new meaning in people’s lives.

This fifth edition continues to pay close atten-

tion to meeting the standards and criteria for the

Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) designation

of the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR).

My thanks are extended to NCFR for their recog-

nition of how important it is to know and apply

management principles. In this edition, there are

many more cases, photos, charts, solo and family

examples, and critical thinking exercises designed

to engage students in their search for insightful

solutions.

I wrote this edition of Resource Management

for Individuals and Families to capture the nuances

of managing today. The study of resource man-

agement is relevant to an individual’s everyday life

and provides insight into how others behave.

When visiting with instructors and students in

Europe, Australia, Asia, Africa, Central and South

America, the United States, the Caribbean, and

Canada, it became clear that making informed

choices is a universal concern. Stress, fatigue, and

financial and time management problems have no

national boundaries.

Making choices—those made yesterday

and those to be made today and tomorrow—and

how those choices affect lives is a central theme

in the book. People can improve. This edition has

much more on the steps needed to achieve goals.

Happiness, social networks, and well-being are

explored in new ways.

Thanks are extended to all who took the

time to tell me how they are using the book from

Australia to Singapore. The latest census data and

world population statistics are included in this

edition along with the newest technologies impact-

ing households. An updated and extended Human

Development Index is included in the last chapter.

Individuals continue to search for the best

ways to balance work and personal life. In recogni-

tion of this, more coverage is devoted to how every-

one is responding to change in the world of work

as well as on the home front. You will find theories

and models such as value chains, Conservation

of Resources Theory, the Resource-Advantage

Theory, and the GO model in this edition. The GO

model is a goal-oriented problem-solving model.

In response to requests by instructors, the

finances chapter is extended to include more on

managing debt and on the value of diversification.

The stress and fatigue chapter has been expanded

with more on the importance of sleep and how

to improve its quality. Researchers are finding

more evidence of how sleep impacts our ability

to reason and function effectively. The chapter

on managing human resources is given the new

title of “Managing Human Needs” to better reflect

the content and to differentiate it from the way the

term “human resources” is often used to mean

personnel management in organizational settings.

My Fulbright awards to Malta and Trinidad

and Tobago allowed me the privilege of teach-

ing family resource management to students at

the University of Malta and the University of the

West Indies. Their insights coupled with those

of my students at Florida State University have

enriched this edition. The students, reviewers, and

instructors said time and time again that they did

not want the basic structure of the book (i.e., the

chapter flow from theory and history to applica-

tion to future challenges) changed, but that they

wanted expanded coverage on certain topics. The

most popular chapters with students are those on

time, stress, and fatigue management. Often this

book is referred to as the time management book

because how you spend your time is reflective of

everything else you manage and value in life. In

addition, students find the application-oriented

chapters on work and family, the environment, and

finances to be extremely useful.

Inclusion is a hallmark of each edition

of Resource Management for Individuals and

Families. I recognize the choices one makes in

personal life within the greater context of family,

friends, and the environment. The first edition of

this book set itself apart from others in its empha-

sis on the management problems faced by singles

and single parents as well as on those faced by

two-parent families. This approach is even more

relevant today as indicated in the opening para-

graph of this preface.

More students are graduating and return-

ing to live at home with their parents or with

siblings or establishing themselves in new places

in careers and living alone in apartments enjoying

friendships with other singles. In 1950, 1 percent

of Americans in their 20s lived alone; now it is

over 10 percent. Instructors like historical per-

spective and the historic homes section of this

book and references to the past are a way to give

perspective to what is currently happening. Every

effort is made to speak to a wide variety of stu-

dents, capturing their interests and taking into

account their concerns. More has been added on

positive psychology, leadership, and success and on

the challenges of managing the second half of life

and the retirement years.

contains 14 well-organized chapters divided into

four parts to introduce students to the best of man-

agement thinking and practice.

Part I begins with an explanation of manage-

ment as a process of using resources to achieve

goals and adds in quality aspects such as success

and happiness. It establishes the foundation and

introduces the management process model used

throughout the book.

Chapter 1 gives basic definitions and

addresses three questions:

• What is management?

• Why manage?

• Who manages?

Chapter 2 covers the interdisciplinary, histori-

cal, and theoretical foundations of the field.

The history of the home continues to fascinate,

and the public is interested in improving

home environments as evidenced by home

improvement shows and networks and supply

stores and websites devoted to homes. This

emphasis on home and environment as a

context within which individuals and families

operate sets this book apart from books that

focus strictly on family relations.

Part II examines the basic concepts underlying

the field of management. These concepts, such as

values, resources, and plans, are timeless and pro-

vide the foundation for the more application-oriented

chapters that follow.

Chapter 3 focuses on values, attitudes,

and goals with a special section on college

students’ values and goals.

Chapter 4 goes right to the heart of the subject

by exploring resources and resource strategy.

Conservation of Resources Theory is added to

this edition.

Chapter 5 provides the steps in decision

making and explains how to solve problems.

The effect of moods and the concept of self-

ambivalence have been added.

Chapter 6 analyzes planning, implementing,

and evaluating. This chapter helps the reader

visualize the steps necessary for success.

Chapter 7 explores communication, social

networks, and the feedback part of the

management process. Plans often fail because

they are not properly communicated.

Part III is about management applications and

each chapter begins with the verb “managing.”

This is a “how-to” section with many practical sug-

gestions. The text goes beyond merely stating the

problems and suggests possible solutions.

Chapter 8 explores population shifts and how

they impact management and resource use.

Chapter 9 shows ways to use time more

effectively.

Chapter 10 discusses workaholism and the

problems associated with balancing work and

family.

Chapter 11 explains what we know from

stress research and how to reduce fatigue.

Sleep and the vagaries of human energy are

also explored.

Chapter 12 brings up environmental problems

and provides solutions. Sustainability, water,

energy, noise, waste and recycling, and air

quality are all discussed.

Chapter 13 on managing finances, is one of

the most important chapters. Students are

setting up their credit and financial patterns

and establishing households. The chapter

explores how to make money stretch further in

a changing economy.

Part IV is about the future of management,

issues, and probabilities.

Chapter 14 concludes the text with an innova-

tive analysis of technology, quality of life, and

family and global change. This section brings

the book full circle—from the introductory

discussions of the history of the study of

management and the problems of contem-

porary families to the management issues on

the horizon.

offers a new, interactive approach to teaching

resource management through special features that

are specifically designed to reflect the themes of

choice and decision making, supporting students’

interest and learning. To engage the reader, many

chapters begin with a case or story from the news

about families.

• Management as a Process Approach

Throughout the book, a five-step model is used

to illustrate the thinking and action parts of the

management process. The model begins with

identifying problems, needs, wants, or goals,

then progresses to clarifying values and iden-

tifying resources. Next it moves on to deciding,

planning, and implementing, and ends with

accomplishing goals and evaluating. The

model takes place within an environmental

context and is held together by feedback.

• An Emphasis on Systems and Economic

Theories Rather than relying on only one

theory, this text applies many theories to

decision-making behavior. No particular area

of the field is overemphasized at the expense

of others.

This text is meant to be introductory yet inclusive.

• Pedagogy Current research and managerial

implications are presented in a readable and

interesting style. Examples and photos are

included to stimulate student interest.

• Each chapter begins with two Did You Know?

statements and an epigraph.

• Critical Thinking activities are woven into

Rhetorical Analysis of Laura Pappano’s “How Big-Time Sports Ate College Life”

It is so unfortunate that the time for reserving and separating the appendages of basketball and football in colleges and universities in America is probably way past. In her article, “How Big-Time Sports Ate College Life,” Laura Pappano contends that the primary focus for universities in America encircles sports rather than education. Pappano wrote this against an escalated controversy of the commercialization of sports by universities in America. Throughout her article, Pappano builds her credibility in the article using persuasive facts, statistics, and real-life examples to demonstrate how ignorantly American universities are devoted to sports, which negatively impacts education.

In her article, Pappano has brought forward a claim that sports have taken over the campus. She cited facts on how universities in America have exploited a substantive amount of their resources to sports. Starting with providing examples to justify that claim using logos, Pappano demonstrates how America televises games to the extent of repealing class time to put up with sports schedules on television. She gave the example of the University of Central Florida, which repealed a class to watch a game against the University of Tulsa on the television (Pappano 423). To further justify her claims of sports taking over education, in terms of costs and builds a logos appeal by bringing out the facts and statistics to convince the reader. She has highlighted the financial resources or costs set aside for sports, where she exemplifies the Knight Commission report of 2010, which brought out that in 2009, the ten leading expenditures in the athlete department amounted to a median of $98 million (Pappano 419). Pappano intends to bring the reader into contention about how much is spent on sports. However, she overlooks the cost of education. She appeals to logos again by bringing out facts by citing Glenn R. Waddell as proof of how the involvement of the players in the school’s sport’s team impacts their academic performance.

Like she applies the logos, Pappano also applies ethos to allow her evidence to tug the conscience of her readers to build her character. One way in which Pappano builds her character is by citing renowned professors like Glenn R. Waddell. From the information she acquires from the professor, who compared more than 29,700 student transcripts starting 1999 to 2007 against the win-loss records of Oregon (Pappano 419), Pappano brings reliable convincing facts that “For every three games won, grade-point average for men dropped 0.02” (Pappano 419). Pappano, to prove that sports impacted performance and behavior of students at schools, uses Dr. Clotfelter’s claims that “Big-time sports” have a real effect on the way people in universities behave.” (419). The facts and detailed information she highlights establish an appeal to the logos and thus impressing readers that the issue is worth looking into.

The authors also create a pathos appeal in her attempt to convince the reader that other developed nations like China prioritize education yet still a powerful nation. She exemplifies a powerful country like China that demonstrate a contrast on the culture and beliefs about academic performance and education in America. She justifies that by the statement, “In China and other parts of the world, there are no gigantic stadiums in the middle of campus. There is a laser focus on education as being the major thing. In the United States, we play football.” (Pappano 418) This is a pathos appeal because it tends to stir up a feeling of disbelief. Pappano wants people to believe that education is more important than sports.

Pappano’s article has one notable fault. Pappano is biased as she only considers proving the negative side of university sports, stating that the only benefit for sports is bringing the students together. She states, “It’s become so important on the college campus that it’s one of the only ways the student body knows how to come together,” (Pappano 418). Everything has its pros and cons, and a one-sided argument would be a depiction of bias. Pappano would have, therefore, tried to state some of the benefits associated with involving ion sports in universities and colleges.

Overall, Pappano establishes a strong claim on why it is beneficial for universities to consider and prioritize education than sports. She highlights credible facts and statistics that the reader and universities may apply in deciding how to share resources between education and sports. Overall, Pappano is an effective writer who has shown to effectively apply the logos, ethos, and pathos to ensure that she drives her point home by effectively appealing to the reader’s conscience and mind in spite of raising a one-sided argument that views sport in universities as purely negative.

Case Study “W6 The Quantum Bank”

W6 The Quantum Bank

Quantum Bank Inc. is a regional bank with branches throughout the southeast. In early 1999 the bank

launched a website that provides its customers with the ability to check the balance of their accounts, and

obtain information about the bank’s various services, obtain contact information, email questions, and link

to a variety of other useful sources of information. Given the site’s tremendous success, competition from

both traditional and non-traditional organizations, and the desire to expand its presence beyond its

current geographical area, Quantum decided to significantly expand its online offerings. More specifically,

Quantum would like to expand its website to include an online bill payment service, allow customers to

apply for credit cards and loans online, open accounts, and manage their investment portfolios online.

Vice-President of Information Systems, Stacey Thomas, has been charged with overseeing the project.

One of her first tasks was to select the project manager. Because of the strategic importance of the

project, she had a strong preference for staffing the project internally as opposed to employing the

services of one of the many consulting firms available that specialize in these types of projects. After

developing a list of ten or so possible candidates to serve as project manager, she finally pared the list

down to the two finalists described below.

Bill Fence: Bill joined Quantum in 1995 after graduating from a well-respected small private school with a

degree in computer science. His first assignment as a member of the bank’s help desk provided him with

exposure to a variety of areas in the hank. He quickly gained a reputation for capable solving difficult

technical problems. In addition, users of the bank’s various computer systems were often heard

commenting on how service-oriented Bill was and on his ability to describe concepts in nontechnical

terms.

Because of both his technical knowledge related to hardware and his ability to program, Bill was selected

to develop the bank’s website in 1998. Bill worked alone on this project and had frequent meetings with

one of the bank’s directors of Information Systems, who supervised the project. Initially, the director did

most of the design work and Bill did the computer programming. Bill often proposed alternative ways for

incorporating key features into the website, and the director would choose among the options Bill

identified. Toward the end of the development project, Bill began to take a more active role in proposing

features to include in the site.

The development projects was largely completed on time and on budget considering the changes in the

scope that were made as the project progressed. Several suggestions that would have extended the

site’s functionality were tabled to be considered after the site was officially launched.

In his current position as webmaster, Bill is in charge of maintaining the bank’s website. Although Bill’s

reports now include a programmer and a hardware specialist, his approach is very much hands on,

staying involved with all technical aspects of the site. Bill has developed an excellent rapport with his two

direct reports, and they have emulated much of Bill’s style including working long hours and even

competing to see who can accumulate the largest number of soft drink cans, empty candy wrappers, and

computer printouts on one desk.Andy Dover: Andy also joined the bank in 1995 after completing his MBA at a large public university.

Andy entered graduate school immediately after graduating with a Civil Engineering undergraduate

degree at the same university. Andy spent his first year rotating between various departments in the

bank’s management training program. After completing this training, Andy requested a permanent

assignment to the operations group. His initial assignment was to oversee the check encoding operation.

After implementing several process improvements, Andy was promoted to senior operations analyst and

worked on several large process improvement projects.

Performance evaluations of Andy suggested that one his greatest strengths was his ability to step back

from a problem and understand how the various issues were interrelated. His evaluations further

recognized him as “a highly motivated self-starter with very good organizational skills.” His organizational

skills also helped him present effectively information, and he was often requested to make short

presentations related to a particular project’s status to senior management.

By almost all accounts, Andy was considered highly competent, completing assigned tasks in a timely

fashion with little or no direct supervision. At the same time, Andy always made it a point to communicate

regularly with other project team members to keep them abreast of his progress. He was often passionate

about his ideas and could typically get buy-in from other team members for his ideas.

Andy is almost always seen carrying his planner. As an avid stock investor, he makes it a point to stay

abreast of trends in technology. He has a basic understanding of how the Internet works and knows all

the important buzzwords. While he has fooled around and created a couple of web pages, he knows very

little about more sophisticated programming languages such as Java, and knows even less about

computer hardware beyond its basic purpose.

The Horrors of Puppy Mills

The Horrors of puppy mills addresses the issue of puppy breeding in puppy mills and the effects of such practices on the puppies. Picture yourself in a cramped cage living in your own fences; freezing in the winter and scorching in the summer; living a life of neglect, abuse, torture, and suffering; and once outliving your usefulness facing a brutal ending filled with malnutrition, dehydration, and sickness; death being your welcoming release. It creates a perfect picture of the conditions under which the puppies are raised and effects on the growing puppy a life as a grown up dog. This address is given to prospective dog owners who are getting to know of the circumstances under which the puppies in the mills grow.

The major premise in this transcript is the poor conditions under which the puppies grow. This pulls great attention to the phrases supporting the poor conditions under which the puppies grow. This includes the lack of grooming, exposure to the sun and light. It gives an analysis of the general observations of the situation at hand. I would present evidence that relates to my general logic in that it presents the actual situation on the ground regarding mass production of animals or produce. Mass production for commercial purpose is always linked to disregard for other factors of conditions of life.

The most effective reasoning strategy is to expose the conditions of cruelty to which the puppies are exposed to and then make the listeners identify with the situation at hand- the mistreatment of puppies brought up in puppy mills.

The use of credible evidence and creation of mental images works well to convince the audience. This can be through exposure of the inhumane conditions that the puppies are subjected to. More to convincing the audience is by showing the effects that these conditions have on the health and psychological growth of the puppy. For instance, the puppies are not properly fed, they are sickly, thirsty, and have eye problems and various infections that affect the general being of the puppy. Another impact is the lack of grooming which exposes the puppy to risks of diseases and other uncomfortable experiences for the puppy and the dogs they mature into.

Puppy Mills are still running, the living conditions of puppy mills, the breeding of dogs in puppy mills, and how to take action against puppy mills. We need to boycott buying puppies from pet stores and support the prohibition of puppy mills. The change can start with you so take action today against Puppy Mills. The owners of the puppy mills are inclined to maximize output with little regards to the health of the puppies.

 

Bursting the Antibacterial Bubble 

Bursting the antibacterial bubble, a case scenario is presented of a kid born with low immunity system and requires utmost care and protection from any harm or diseases. All these in a bid to create a bacterial bubble that provides protection for the child with a low immune system. Similar principles are applied today as people try anything possible to avoid contracting bacterial or fungal infections. This is primarily done using antibacterial hand washes and tissues.

In presenting this, the issue at hand is factual and with adequate easily available evidence. I would make a point of creating distinctive differences between the created case scenario and the actual issue on increased use of hand sanitizers and antiseptics to keep away from bacterial infections.

My major premise would focus on the need to create a bubble of protection from infections from elements around us. This, I would have a couple with the various evidence of the increased use of antiseptics, anti- bacterial tissues and hand washes. This I would support with factors from increased demand and sales of the anti- bacteria’s. The increased sales are an evidence of increased uptake of these products by the market. With the changing times, people are becoming more careful and try every possible bit to avoid infections
