compare the pros and cons of continuing nursing education

This is a Collaborative Learning Community (CLC) assignment.

In your CLC group, create a PowerPoint presentation of 10-15 slides in which you compare the pros and cons of continuing nursing education related to the following:

  1. Impact on competency.
  2. Impact on knowledge and attitudes.
  3. Relationship to professional certification.
  4. Relationship to ANA Scope and Standards of Practice.
  5. Relationship to ANA Code of Ethics.

Take a position with your CLC group: Should continuing nursing education be mandatory for all nurses? Support your position with rationale.

A minimum of three scholarly sources are required for this assignment.

While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are not required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite.

Describe how the evidence informs nursing practice.

introduction:

There are many sources of information available on the web and in journals relating to the nursing discipline. Therefore, it is of pivotal importance to understand the basic tenets of critical appraisal of research for its use in intraprofessional healthcare practices. The aim of evidence-based practice (EBP) is to employ a three-pronged approach blending the best available research evidence, patient values and preferences, and clinical expertise.

In this task, you will critique two primary research evidence sources. You will select one quantitative and one qualitative peer-reviewed journal article on a healthcare topic of interest.

Requirements:

Your submission must be your original work. No more than a combined total of 30% of the submission and no more than a 10% match to any one individual source can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. Use the Turnitin Originality Report available in Taskstream as a guide for this measure of originality.

The rubric provides detailed criteria for evaluating your submission. You are expected to use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission. Each requirement below may be evaluated by more than one rubric aspect. The rubric aspect titles may contain hyperlinks to relevant portions of the course.

Note: Research evidence must not be more than ten years old.

Note: Be sure to upload a copy of the full text of the articles with your submission.

A.  Evaluate a primary quantitative research peer-reviewed journal article (suggested length of 3–5 pages) that has healthcare implications by doing the following:

1.  Identify how the researcher addresses the five following areas of the selected journal article, using the attached “Evidence Table”:

•   background or introduction

•   review of the literature

•   discussion of methodology

•   data analysis

•   researcher’s conclusion

2.  Critique whether the evidence presented in each section of the journal article supports the researcher’s conclusion.

Note: The attached “Evidence Table” may be used to address A1. A2-A5 may be addressed on the same page under the table.

Note: Try to think about how the first four sections in the A1 table support the fifth section, the conclusion.

3.  Explain the protection of human subjects and cultural considerations of the journal article.

4.  Identify strengths and limitations of the study.

5.  Describe how the evidence informs nursing practice.

B.  Evaluate a primary qualitative research peer-reviewed journal article (suggested length of 3–5 pages) that has healthcare implications by doing the following:

1.  Identify how the researcher addresses the five following areas of the selected journal article, using the attached “Evidence Table”:

•   background or introduction

•   review of the literature

•   discussion of methodology

•   data analysis

•   researcher’s conclusion

2.  Critique whether the evidence presented in each section of the journal article supports the researcher’s conclusion.

Note: The attached “Evidence Table” may be used to address B1. B2-B5 may be addressed on the same page under the table.

Note: Try to think about how the first four sections in the B1 table support the fifth section, the conclusion.

3.  Explain the protection of human subjects and cultural considerations of the journal article.

4.  Identify strengths and limitations of the study.

5.  Describe how the evidence informs nursing practice.

C.  Acknowledge sources, using APA-formatted in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.

What health risks associated with obesity

The case scenario provided will be used to answer the discussion questions that follow.

Case Scenario

Mr. C., a 32-year-old single man, is seeking information at the outpatient center regarding possible bariatric surgery for his obesity. He reports that he has always been heavy, even as a small child, but he has gained about 100 pounds in the last 2–3 years. Previous medical evaluations have not indicated any metabolic diseases, but he says he has sleep apnea and high blood pressure, which he tries to control with sodium restriction. He current works at a catalog telephone center.

Objective Data

  1. Height: 68 inches; Weight 134.5 kg
  2. BP: 172/96, HR 88, RR 26
  3. Fasting Blood Glucose: 146/mg/dL
  4. Total Cholesterol: 250mg/dL
  5. Triglycerides: 312 mg/dL
  6. HDL: 30 mg/dL

Critical Thinking Questions

What health risks associated with obesity does Mr. C. have? Is bariatric surgery an appropriate intervention? Why or why not?

Mr. C. has been diagnosed with peptic ulcer disease and the following medications have been ordered:

  1. Magnesium hydroxide/aluminum hydroxide (Mylanta) 15 mL PO 1 hour before bedtime and 3 hours after mealtime and at bedtime.
  2. Ranitidine (Zantac) 300 mg PO at bedtime.
  3. Sucralfate/Carafate 1 g or 10ml suspension (500mg / 5mL) 1 hour before meals and at bedtime.

The patient reports eating meals at 7 a.m., noon, and 6 p.m., and a bedtime snack at 10 p.m. Plan an administration schedule that will be most therapeutic and acceptable to the patient.

  1. Assess each of Mr. C.’s functional health patterns using the information given. (Hint: Functional health patterns include health-perception – health management, nutritional – metabolic, elimination, activity-exercise, sleep-rest, cognitive-perceptual, self-perception – self-concept, role-relationship, sexuality – reproductive, coping – stress tolerance.)
  2. What actual or potential problems can you identify? Describe at least five problems and provide the rationale for each.

review on how current research supports the   PICOT

Max Points: 100

Details:
While the implementation plan prepares students to apply their   research to the problem or issue they have identified for their   capstone change proposal project, the literature review enables   students to map out and move into the active planning and development   stages of the project.

A literature review analyzes how current research supports the   PICOT, as well as identifies what is known and what is not known in   the evidence. Students will use the information from the earlier PICOT   Statement Paper and Literature Evaluation Table assignments to develop   a 750-1,000 word review that includes the following sections:

  1. Title page
  2. Introduction section
  3. A comparison     of research questions
  4. A comparison of sample   populations
  5. A comparison of the limitations of the study
  6. A conclusion section, incorporating recommendations for further   research
